As a loyal baseball fan, I can't help but think that the latest steroids scandal is going to be extremely detrimental to the game itself and it's credibility. Between the Canseco book, the latest with Bond's mistress and the whole Giambi debacle, the sport has really suffered a "black eye" during the off season. I really think it's going to be tough for the average fan not to lose some respect for "America's pastime." Take it for what it's worth, but Canseco claims there will be much more forthcoming in the next month... to be continued. There is a good possibility that Bonds will break Aaron's home run record this year, 52 behind I think, is there any chance that people will be able to applaud him for his accomplishment without thinking that the record is tainted? I'd like to know how my fellow baseball fans feel about the whole issue.

this season will be tough, but the game will eventually recover.

there are many fans out there who simply don't care.
the ones that do care about steroids, will eventually get over it and come back.

baseball survived the W.S. being cancelled in '94........it can survive this.

also, anyone w/ a clue knew these guys were on something since the mid to late 80's. the only difference now is that we're starting to get some "proof" of what we've always suspected.

If you ask me, Rob Neyer hit the nail on the head when he said the benchmark for stats has changed since the days of Babe, and even since the days of Hammerin' Hank... now, with roids and what-not, I'd say Bonds has to hit like 8-900 something homeruns before we can compare him to anybody from the past (which I think is a bad idea anyways)... you have to compare them to their contemporaries, and Bonds is nowhere near the likes of Babe yet... nor will he ever be


But to answer your question, I think baseball will get through all this 'roid stuff and all of it will fade into oblivion once the first pitch on opening day is thrown... sooo close now...

besides, I've read some stuff where players have said that the steroids problems is nothing compared to the use of amphetamines in MLB today.

Attendance is at an all-time high. After spring training when all of the tough questions are asked and subsequently deflected, the focus will return to the field, just like last year.

I think the only reminders we'll have is each time Jason Giambi steps to the plate or if/when Barry Bonds breaks the record. Other than that, people will forget.

i just hope every pitcher throws at barry's big ole head... not a hard target to hit

i also hope if he breaks hank's record it happens on the road and everyone boos the shit out of him... he's a jerk and a cheater

I think Jason Giambi is about to embark on a season filled with the worst fan treatment a player has ever recieved in the history of sports over the course of a full season.

I'm pretty sure w/ the new testing, the results can be publicized. so as players fail tests, we may be hearing about new players to ridicule.

except for Jackie Robinson.

New testing? For what? They still don't test for amphetamines or human growth hormones.

or hank aaron in his pursuit of babe's record... that's one thing that pisses me off to no end... hank was fighting racism day-in, day-out when he was chasing the babe... barry gets steroids... sounds fair to me

As far as I am concerned...roger maris still is the home run kind and Hank Aaron will always have the most career HRs. I find it was too convenient for these guys who have been in the league since they were skinny little sticks in the early 80s and only now are hitting 70 homers at bulky, meat men.

I am not much of a baseball fan as much as I was when i was younger but I care, and know that this whole ordeal is awful....I don't think even the Red Sox winning the series can save it.. (Which was awesome by the way)

too be fair, Mac did hit 49 as a skinny rookie....he has the perfect swing for it.

The game will go on and it will recover, though.

I think the PA announcers should have to announce players who have admitted or been caught using roids as "Coming to the plate, admitted steroid user, Barry Bonds!!!"
