I'm starting the thread, yet i'm not actually that interested. Huh?
Well to me the US PGA is a bit of a flop, especially this year. I hate all the hype and 'will it really be a major without Tiger' crap but the thing is the US PGA probably isn't big enough to stand up without him at the moment. Don't get me wrong - whoever wins it absolutely deserves to be a major winner.
However...what does the tournament have going for it? The Masters has tradition and beauty, the British Open has a different beauty and is the only major outside the US, the US Open is the brutal beast that slays people and makes and breaks...while the US PGA has been a pushover for some years and now they decide to toughen it up. Yet it's never has an aura about it.
Can you really think about truly great US PGA's of recent times? Tiger's v Bob May/Sergio were good but not that memorable. Past that, even a golf tragic can't remember who won and when.

Well let's see:
1997 Davis Love wins right after his father dies....remember the rainbow? 1999 Woods/Garcia as you mentioned 2000 Woods/May some of the best golf of the last 10 years. Mentioned by you. 2001 David Toms acing 15 on Saturday and then laying up on the 72nd hole to beat Phil by 1. 2002 Rich Fucking Beem holding off everyone including Tiger. 2003 Shaun Micheel hitting a 7-Iron to 2 inches on 18 to win. 2004 Vijay defeating DiMarco and Leonard in a playoff. 2005 Phil holding off Tiger, Davis and others to win his second major with a flop shot to 2 feet on the 72nd hole. 2006-2007 Tiger dominating the field in oppresive heat to win his 3rd and 4th Wannamaker's.
I think it's been a great major the last 10-15 years.
The Masters has tried to emulate the U.S. Open by making the course more difficult and lacking in Birdies and Eagles. That tournament was known for the loud roars on Sunday afternoon. Today....gone.
With the exception of this year the U.S. Open has been set up with insanely small fairways and grusome rough. 3 over or 5 over or 1 over isn't the most exciting golf. Although the US Open remains my favorite major.
The British Open in my opinion is always exciting because of the history of the tournament.

All good points, especially 1997 as that was incredible. Garcia's slice round the tree sticks out as well.
But no it's still definitely my fourth favourite major. Augusta>British>US Open>PGA
The Masters did suffer a bit from ego. It couldn't hack Tiger's low numbers in 1997 and the prospect of more, so they 'Tiger proofed' it. That was a bit of blind panic based on one tournament I think. However - just the history of the tournament, the beauty of the course, Amen Corner, the green jacket, champions dinner...it all does it for me. Even how it's presented is better than the rest. And how it's always on the same course isn't bad either.
The British is the British and nothing needs changing there. Love it, especially St Andrews.
While I don't like 3-over wins either, I feel like it has a time and a place at the US Open. At the PGA, i'm not particularly keen to see it. A good old fashioned birdie feast with the chance of that magical 63 being broken would make me happier...which we certainly won't see this year.

I totally disagree on Augusta National. The rough is still not rough, it's better than fairways on most municipal courses and you can hit good shots out of the rough and even the woods (11) It is much tighter but it had to be.
The vast difference two years ago was bitter awful cold. The course is longer and more difficult but it has ALWAYS been a shot makers course and for a time of maybe 5 or 8 years there 1997 most spectacularly... the technology of the out did the course. It became 5 long hitters able to bomb it and hit short iron to the green. Guess what, tough greens get much easier for pro's when they can throw darts. The toughest part of augusta are the greens. Yes it's LONG now, but it also requires that you make good shots or great shots if you mess up the first one especially the drive. It's tough, but it's a major. Poor play has been the major factor in the decline of roars. There were plenty of amazing shots last year chip ins etc... and spectacular failures in the always menacing water of 12, 13 and 15. The Masters to me will always be the super bowl and sometimes you just don't get the excecution the way you want it from everyone. It was close last year though.... and that's what they want at Augusta National... a competitive back 9 on sunday. Unfortunately the better golf was on the front 9 this year.

Lowest round ever in a major. I think 10 people have done it.
Points taken but you can't disagree they didn't Tiger-proof it - they'd probably even admit it.

oh absolutely, that's why they narrowed considerably the first cut. So he couldn't stop everything 2 ft from the hole after a long inaccurate drive. The field is a lot closer toegther now on Saturday morning anyway.

I know what the 63 is, although I think the number who have done it is much higher (23).....I just don't see it happening at "The Monster".

Write your own punchline:
Police: John Daly found drunk outside Hooters Wednesday, October 29, 2008
WINSTON-SALEM N.C. (AP) — Golfer John Daly was taken into custody Sunday morning by Winston-Salem police after he was found drunk outside an area Hooters restaurant.
Police said in a statement Wednesday that said officers went to the restaurant on a medical call. When they arrived, Daly was being treated by emergency workers after losing consciousness.
While at the restaurant, police said Daly “appeared extremely intoxicated and uncooperative,” refused repeatedly to be taken to the hospital and was asked to leave the restaurant by several workers.
Daly was taken to the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center for a 24-hour stay, until he was sober.
