Forgive the spinoff, but I'm bored today. I could see a possible case made for Darrell Green, though Champ's numbers are growing almost identical. I should bar any mention of Deion in this thread.

I've never seen a better corner in his prime than Lester Hayes but i'm sure most people would laugh it off. He was like fucking glue(as were his hands, literally) and was by far the most feared corner for a 5 year span. I'd have to go with Deion though. He always made the team he was on better(except the Redskins) and has the rings to prove it. QB's wouldn't even bother looking on Deion's side and that's a big reason why his INT numbers weren't always that great.

It depends on if he's healthy or not. If he's healthy. (I'm looking at you Steve Mcnair) Why the F would you through near CHamp Bailey?
I really don't know who the "best" corner is, but I think Champ is far better in run support and a far surer tackler than Deion. They both could make a claim. There are so many really good ones though.
Darell Green Lester Hayes.
Champ is probably the best CB I've ever seen. I think I can say that.
Deion is a sensational athlete, he was good at everything, but I think champ does the little things a little better than Deion did at CB, though Deion might be a better overall athlete/playmaker.
Deion could do so much though return a kick return an Int. probably never used as much as he could have been at WR but he could have done that too. He certainly enabled the defense to do different things.
Champ probably could but I don't think defenses are as afraid of him as they were Deion.
Deion in his prime was probably a touch faster than Champ and even though he took far more risks his closing speed was freaking sick.
If Bailey is healthy though he's as good as it gets at CB.

If you do, you'll have to put an * next to Champ's name as the best ever. Deion is the best cover corner of all time, and I've never seen a corner do enough with the rest of his game to make up the ground lost in that category. Deion wasn't the best tackler, but who cares when nobody ever completes a pass within a five-mile radius of him? Plus, he was probably the most versatile player in the history of the game (sorry Bo).
And I think the "water covers 2/3's of the earth, I cover the rest" line started with Deion.

This is one of those positions in pro sports that goes well beyond the numbers. In my opinion there is virtually no way to determine who is the best aside from watching every play of each game. I wish I could remember the site (may have been coldhardfootballfacts.com) but whoever it was did an in depth analysis of each play in the NFL during a 5 year period (something like 2000-2005). One of the main things they used was how many times the ball was thrown to each side of the field, and then more specifically, to the man or zone each defensive back was covering. Overall the breakdown was something like 60-40, with the 40 percent obviously being to the side of the field that the stronger corner was on. But the numbers were much farther apart for the teams with the top end corners. I believe Champ Bailey had the lowest average of all players in the league at that point. They threw to his side of the field less than 25 percent of the time on average throughout that 5 year period. I think the lowest single season number was something like 11 percent for Ty Law in '01 or '02, but Bailey was consistently the top guy in the other 4 years.

No, silly, T.O. The other team never scores when he comes on for those hail mary passes!
