"If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind."

"If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error."

"Mankind are greater gainers by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves, than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest."

I mean, he fuckin owns so much, that even if you disagree with him, you still support him.

As my favourite philosopher said:

Quote:
Man does not live for pleasure; only the Englishman does.

More or less sums up what I think of Mill and the utilitarians.

To tax stimulants for the sole purpose of making them more difficult to be obtained is a measure differing only in degree from their entire prohibition, and would be justifiable only if that were justifiable. Every increase in cost is a prohibition to those whose means do not come up to the augmented price; and to those who do, it is a penalty laid on them for gratifying a particular taste.

If society lets any considerable number of its members grow up mere children, incapable of being acted on by rational consideration of distant motives, society has itself to blame for the consequences.

Im glad Mill was an utilitarian and could argument how democracy and freedom of expression are very pragmantic conditions, not just "nice things". We still live in a world where a ridiculous amount of people believe that things work better when they are "simplified" bu concetrating the power with few men, or sometimes even a single a man.

all i understand from that is that, if your opinion is right, you're missing out on going from wrong to right, arguably because you're already there. so, how did you get there in the first place?

if your opinion is wrong, it sucks, because the truth is better, but you won't know it, because you're wrong. but isn't this what he was talking about first, in experiencing going from wrong to right and how cool it is?

i'm dumb, i don't get philosophy :?

Imagine an ugly girl, then imagine her standing next to a pretty girl, now you perceive the uglyness more intensely, and the same happens to the beauty of the pretty girl.

so the truth is distorted by human perceptions? there's no absolute truth?

It means that is easy to perceive the thing that right when this thing is next to what is wrong.
