TORONTO — A 17-year-old is in critical condition after a shooting inside a Scarborough school just before the noon hour.
The male victim was shot in the chest in a hallway at Bendale Business and Technical Institute - in the Midland Rd. and Lawrence Ave. area - around 11:44 a.m.
"When we got the call, it was for an unknown trouble, and when officers arrived there, they located a victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound," Toronto police Const. Wendy Drummond told CP24. The victim was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital.
Toronto police Chief Bill Blair says a gun was fired during an "altercation" between several young men near the parking lot of Bendale Business and Technical Institute.
Police are seeking a suspect described as 18 to 19 years old, five-foot-10, with dark skin, and wearing a cloth hat.
Reports suggest a man was seen at the school with a long-barrelled rifle or shotgun.
The shooting comes the same week that Toronto enacted a program that puts police officers into certain city schools. Police said there was not an officer on duty inside Bendale on Tuesday.
The program followed the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Jordan Manners in a Toronto high school in 2007.
