Is this even possible? If it is possible, is it advisable for trading purposes? I don't want to put anything into the stream of trading that shouldn't be there. I have a lot of PJ VCD/SVCDs that I got before the DVD burner boom. What to do with them? Any thoughts? Thanks.!

you can do it, but its not advisable for trading, its like converting an mp3 to a shn file. you can do it, but the quality isnt gonna get any better and its not good to trade.

You should NEVER trade anything that has been converted from VCD or SVCD. EVER!! There is no advantage to putting it on DVD and people might mistake it for a DVD-quality video. Just trade the VCDs as they are.

i got some really great xvid files. but i dont know if i should covnert them to vcd or svcd.
converting from one format to another, you will never gain quality. should you convert them to vcd or svcd? if you need them on a disc you can play in a DVD player, yeah that'll do it.

i know it wont gain quality. i just dont wanna loose it. thats why i'm confused.
When you transcode a file from one format to another, you will always lose quality. It's kind of like how a VHS loses quality as it gets lower in generation. You will never get as good a file as the original.
VCD/SVCD is probably a lower quality than the file you have, so when you convert it will be necessary to lose quality in order to make it conform to VCD standards. If you were going to DVD you might not notice a visible difference (or a visible loss in quality), but going to VCD/SVCD you probably will. Use SVCD if your DVD player supports it, if not then you will have to go to the lower quality VCD.

re-encoding into a different format does not neccessarily mean losing quality. depends on the codec and target file size. if you re-endode mp3 into flac, you wont lose quality either ... (s)vcd indeed is one of the "weaker" formats.
by slightly enhancing i meant editing the video-file, e.g. adjust brightness/contrast. that could improve "subjective quality", but is of course basically limited to the quality of the source.
