i downloaded some avi files and tried playing them in windows media player...the sound plays perfectly but the picture doesn't show. a few years ago i downloaded codecs to enable the play of avi files, but i recently reformatted my hard drive and forgot where i downloaded them in the first place. where can i download them for free?

download VLC player (free, very little resources), problem solved
though in the last few weeks it has started playing up on my computer..freezing at the end of a video (to the point of sometime hanging the PC)..no idea why since I didn't change anything (and I tried re-installing..only stopped the hanging, not the freezing)

You should go to download.com and search for the Cole2k Media Codec Pack- that usually will solve 9/10 compatibility problems with your Windows Media Player.
