I don't expect everyone to have an answer to this question, but are there any major sports in your area where you don't root for anyone?
For me it's college football and hockey.
I never went to a big college, so hence there was no team to latch onto. I have a fluid pecking order of college teams based on several criteria. One is if their players do good or bad for my pro team. (Vanderbilt has skyrocketed for this reason.) Second is if a team is going to fuck up the BCS (usually, but not always non-BCS teams. I often get mistaken for being a BSU fan for this reason.) I also tend to like or dislike teams based on the culture of the school. (i.e., for Texas, against Texas A&M, for Oregon (where I almost went), against BYU...)
I appreciate the game of hockey, but even then, there was nothing ever special about any one particular team to latch onto like there was for the Broncos, Celtics, and Red Sox.

you should really pick a team so that you can become a "true" sports fan.

while we have MLS, indoor lacrosse, outdoor lacrosse, arena football, the NBADL... i don't find myself really latched onto those teams. but if i had to choose one in those sports, i guess i'd cheer for colorado. but i don't like, bleed powder blue and maroon for the rapids or anything.

college sports is completely different than pro sports. you're allowed to root for as many teams as you'd like when it comes to college.

Utahrd's go APESHIT over the JAZZ.
Utahrd's go APESHIT for BYU (for obvious reasons).
Utahrd's go APESHIT for BRONCOS and 49ERS.
Utahrd's don't no much about hockey, and it's pathetic to go to the local ECHL arena and see the arena empty () but the ones that do go to the games are diehards and its fun to interact with them.
---
I like the Utah Jazz.
I like Utah Utes (non-mormon, I always pulled for the non-LDS schools). Not really affiliated with BIG colleges because of living in this area with Division IAA, Jr. Colleges, and Mountain West. I slightly followed the Cornhuskers back in the day, because my grandfather grew up in Nebraska so that was his team. I've started getting into OU sports because my friend is now an assistant track coach for them, so I feel I have to back them because I back him.
I like the Seahawks, because my mother and her side of the family lives and grew up in Washington so I have an affiliation to those Seattle sports.
I like the Mariners, for the above reason. But seeing as we don't have a MLB team close to Utah. I usually just follow the minor league teams here and their affiliated MLB team just because I follow the players that I've seen play in the minors (LA Angels, LA Dodgers).
I like the Avalanche because I get the Avalanche feed in Utah so I watch and follow the Avalanche ever since they moved from Quebec to Colorado. Now I've started following the Maple Leafs more, but it's kind of hard.
College kind of. I grew up rooting for the Gators for as long as I can remember. I went to FAU, so I obviously root for them also. I may be going to Grad School at UF, so that would make things a lot easier.
But that said, Go Gators! And also, go Owls.

I don't call my self a diehard/follower of the smaller sports in the city. Yeah I'll watch them and root for the local teams. Because I like sports, but I wouldn't call my self a diehard for those sports.

Are the Broncos really that big down there? I thought Steve Young would still solidify that area in being Niners country. It seems like every Utahn I've known has been a Niners fan for that reason.

sorry it was an Idaho Steelheads logo (ECHL).
Ah. Yeah, I don't think the ECHL is exactly major, but it's definitely the biggest pro sport here. This town lives, eats, and breathes BSU football right now, though.

It's Split.
Back in the day of Young and Elway. It was really 50-50, being that those usually was the only games that got broadcast in the area, but with more really following the niners (because of Young).
But now, I think I know more Broncos fans around here. My families best friends are DIEHARD Broncos fans.
