Was checking out some oscar winners from the past and came up with some legitimate ones. Figured some people would want to add their own.
1975: Best Actor - Art Carney(Harry and Tonto). Pacino(Godfather II) and Jack(Chinatown) were nominated with Carney. I've only seen bits of harry and Tonto but i'm gonna assume he doesn't hold a candle to the 2 other performances mentioned.
1988 - Best Supporting Actor - Sean Connery(The Untouchables). Connery was great in Untouchables but Vincent D'Onofrio was spectacular in Full metal Jacket. Funny thing is that he wasn't even nominated for BSA.
1991 - Best Picture - Dances With Wolves. I like Dances With Wolves but Goodfellas might be the greatest movie ever made and shits all over Costner's face. If these two movies were on at the same time i bet 85% of people watching would leave Goodfellas on.
1962 - Best Picture - West Side Story. Maybe i'm not gay enough to like WSS but "The Hustler" shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as WSS. A total insult if you ask me. Plus George C Scott should have won BSA too.
1990 - Best Picture - Driving Miss Daisy. Cmon, do people really still think this movie was any good? No wonder why Spike Lee hates white people, his film wasn't even nominated.
1987 - Best Supporting Actor - Michael Caine(Hannah and Her Sisters). A pity win for Caine while great performances like Dennis Hopper(Hoosiers) and Tom Berrenger(Platoon) got the shaft.
1980 - Best Picture - Kramer Vs Kramer. K vs K is a good movie but compared to Apocoalypse Now? Cmon

1997 Best Supporting Actor - Cuba Gooding Jr. Oh please. William H Macy(Fargo) and Ed Norton(Primal Fear) actually acted. Cuba just played himself and he still sucked

One more before i let you fuckers have at it
2002 BSA - Jim Broadbent(Iris). Wtf is this one all about? I've seen Iris and it sucked(except for all the tits). Ben Kingsley(Sexy Beast) in by far his best acted role. Even Ethan Hawke(Training Day) deserved the nod over Broadbentover

Apocolypse Now lost to Kramer Vs Kramer?? My word.
I agree with Norton being robbed in '97. And while at the time I thought as well that SPR got the shaft, in retrospect I've come to feel that SIL was indeed a better overall film than SPR. I think people get too caught up with the admittedly classic and jarring opening, but on the whole, it didn't quite have it.

Kramer vs. Kramer was one of the least favorite movies I have ever watched. Everyone here has mentioned some good ones.
The Departed winning best picture was pretty bad although I don't know what else was even up there. I love Jack and Scorsese and loved the cast but it was nothing more that a good action/drama.

no fuckin way.
Oh hell everyone knew that was coming. And I think most members of the Academy might even admit right out in public by now that they voted for him 100% entirely because they knew he'd react like an uncaged monkey on steroids just exactly as he did, and they wanted to witness it. That they knew it was far from an actual great performance.
This is just another reason why I say that while sure, this stuff can spark some fun and interesting conversation occassionally, ultimately all awards are just silly.
Oh and this reminds me. On the Preston & Steve show, the morning show here in Philly on WMMR, occasionally they do a bit called "Toddler Theatre" where the Preston guy uses his two sons (they're like maybe 4 and 5 years old) to recite dialogue from certain movies, and callers see if they can guess which ones, for prizes. Well in the latest round, he used the "Put your fucking mouth on the curb!" scene from American History X Yea the curses are bleeped for FM radio, but he still has the kids actually say the whole curse when recording the bit. Hi-larious.
Just watched Full Metal Jacket again a couple days ago, how the hell did R. Lee Ermey not get a supporting actor nomination for his roll as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman, much less the oscar? There's not a single moment in this film where you get the sense that he's acting. Apparently he wrote much of his own lines and improvised several scenes. "Happy birthday to you,.....happy birthday to Jesus, happy birthday to you."
