just out of curiosity, what are the major differences you have noticed?
I looked hard at buying the d60 but I didn't see enough reason to spend the extra money. Instead, I saved the extra cash on the d40 and bought a zoom lens.

what is HDR imaging?

From wikipedia:
Quote:
In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of exposures (the range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows.

Think of it like this: if you overexpose a picture, it is mostly white save for a few select areas on the far end of the light spectrum. Likewise, if you underexpose, it is mostly black save for a few areas. The idea is that, under proper exposure, these areas do not show up as well. HDR imaging attempts to take the best highlights from the overexposed, underexposed, and properly exposed pictures of the same image.
so how do you do it?
It really helps to have a tripod, otherwise use something to rest the camera on. Frame your image and shoot in Manual mode. Adjust the metering for proper exposure and take your picture. Then, keeping your shutterspeed the same, change the aperture by at least 1 F-stop to to take an overexposed and underexposed picture. It doesn't matter how many you take, as long as it is the same amount on each side.
For instance, if proper exposure of your subject is at F-10, your pictures should look like this:
F-8
F-9
F-10
F-11
F-12
all at the same shutter speed. F-10 will be the proper exposure, 11 and 12 will be overexposed, and 8 and 9 will be underexposed. Then download the free trial version of photomatix and load them in. The program is pretty userfriendly.
A few things to keep in mind:
If clouds keep passing by you will have to keep adjusting for proper exposure, so you might want to wait for an overcast or sunny day.
If your camera's lowest F-stop setting is 5.6, and that happens to be the setting for proper exposure of your subject, it won't work. You won't be able to dial it down to underexpose.
I hope this makes sense and if you end up with something you like, please post it.

i would rather have a d40 and zoom lens myself. the megapixel difference can be seen at times with the d60. vibration reduction is kinda cool. the camera itself, i think, is a bit sturdier. but there's not a whole lot different between the two, though.

The night photos are nice. Almost perfectly exposed. Maybe just a tick over exposed if I want to get criticial.

i've been shooting at night more and more now so i've slowly felt more comfortable with the camera in that setting.

Took this one of the Roanoke valley from right outside my office. Used the Orton effect on it, it looks better big so open it up.

This was in Chincotgeague, VA (eastern shore). The seagull below the sun was just plain luck.

How much photoshopping/HDRing did that one get?

There's no HDR on this one. I did a light saturation boost that I give to almost all my pictures, and this one required very little. Then I applied the Orton Effect (you can just google "orton effect" to see how to do this if you have photoshop) and masked it so that the effect did not apply to the sky (made it lose some color), the tree (it looked better with the sharp detail contrasting the sunrise) and the back of the sign in the lower right.
I contemplated leaving it as it was because it was a good shot, but it looked cooler with the effect on it.

Very nice, thanks for the info Dscan.
I did goolge the Orton effect but couldn't believe that was just a global blur overlay. Leaving the tree, sky and part of the sign sharp was a nice touch.

im not a photo/anything photo related afficionado, but i love this one. i just stumbled in here by chance, and now this one if my background.

edit: it reminds me of bag end (where bilbo lived in the hobbit/lord of the rings) the way its set apart from the rest of the community but still a part of it. its like a modern version of that setting. i feel like you be looking out on the town from this perspective, then turn around and be at your doorstep.

I'm glad you guys like it.
Sometimes I take where I work for granted. The Roanoke valley is sort of in between the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains. My place of employment is on a hill in the valley with a lot of open space (sometimes we hit golf balls on our soccer field at lunch) and it has great views of both sides of the valley.

All great pictures. Dscans, your sunset pix and the one of the flower are really excellent.
