Andrew Bird to Unleash Noble Beast on New Album Adds a few dates, releases live album to his webstore
Know who's especially excited for the new Andrew Bird album? Some dude named Andrew Bird. Back in June, the songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/blogger noted in the New York Times' Measure for Measure, "I listened to my record recently and I'm concerned about how much I like it."
But despite those fears, Bird's got his follow-up to last year's Armchair Apocrypha in the can.
The disc's called Noble Beast, and it's due from Fat Possum January 27. You can get your first earful of leadoff track "Oh No" over in Forkcast right now. And yes, there is lots of whistling.
Bird also has a new live album available right this instant through his webstore. It's called Live in Montreal, and it was recorded at the city's La Tulipe in September of last year with Martin Dosh and Jeremy Ylvisaker backing up Bird.
Most of Andrew's fall tour find him in solo flight, however, but one and all-- including that action-packed Obama benefit in Brooklyn on Tuesday-- are listed after the jump.
Noble Beast:
01 Oh No 02 Masterswarm 03 Fitz and the Dizzyspells 04 Effigy 05 Tenuousness 06 Nomenclature 07 Not a Robot, But a Ghost 08 Anonanimal 09 Natural Disaster 10 Confess 11 Souverian 12 On Ho!
Live in Montreal:
01 Intro 02 Why? 03 Opposite Day 04 Simple X 05 Cannonade 06 Imitosis 07 Spare-Ohs 08 Skin Is, My 09 Darkmatter
Andrew Bird:
10-03 Bethlehem, PA - Zoellner Arts Center at Lehigh University (solo show) 10-04 Ithaca, NY - State Theatre of Ithaca (solo show) 10-06 New York, NY - Hiro Ballroom 10-07 New York, NY - Hiro Ballroom 10-07 Brooklyn, NY - Music Hall of Williamsburg ("Barack Rock") 10-08 Portsmouth, NH - The Music Hall (solo show) 10-09 Albany, NY - The Egg (solo show) 10-10 Northampton, MA - Calvin Theatre (solo show) 10-19 Los Angeles, CA - Largo at The Coronet (solo show) 10-20 Los Angeles, CA - Largo at The Coronet (solo show)

Honestly I'd like to see him make a really out-there record. I enjoy just about everything I've heard from the guy, but it's all just so polite, you know? Judging by "Oh No!," it doesn't sound like that's changing any time soon, but I'd be very interested in hearing Bird just throw caution to the wind and do something really weird.

he's a popster at heart, sorry to disappoint.
there are some more "out there" instrumental/improvisational live recordsings and outtakes though, but his true strength and interest is making great pop songs.

Yeah, I'm not going to deny that. Maybe just a bit of attitude. Or something.

live + odds and end releases that are usually just Tour Only releases sold at his shows
some of them are very very good. Jim James guests on one
running through them tonight, this is a nice addition to my mr. bird collection.
one thing i will say is that bird is like a professor up there: he's playing the violin like a guitar, looping track over track, swapping them back and forth, swinging around his guitar, then going back and playing the violin like normal. it's impressive to watch.

you should download the fingerlings, 1-3, if you don't already have it. it's much looser in format that his album work i am aware of. ethiobirds, on fingerlings 3, is a 10-minute long bird-worked symphony.

that's a great version, but i prefer the instrumental from Fingerlings 3. the looped violins and the symphony of crickets and cicadas make for such a haunting piece of music.
