catcher in the rye. i dont even have the slightest idea about this one. people mention it all the time as one of the classics. im sure many think its a vital piece of literature, and others probably feel its overrated. i still want to know for myself.

I finally got around to read it earlier this year... and don't understand, aside from stylistic novelty, why it's so highly rated.

Moby Dick is the one I have meant to read for ever but probably never will..

i don't like the book too much, and i can't stand the voice of holden. i'd say the "stylistic novelty" criticism is a bit harsh and superficial. from what i remember in high school when i was reading it. the cool thing about the book is that the story is told by a narrator that you can't really trust. he's not giving a fair portrayal of things that happen. he narrates in a way that makes him look right. though his cynicism is outdated, holden sees the world cynically and often avoids self-examination.

any book, (art painting movie ect...) which can make a claim like this has my respect, because people feel strongly against it or strongly for it. like it or not, it creates strong feelings in people.

well, that's what I meant, it was an original style of narrative, that point I get.
But it's not enough to make it an interesting read/story.

very much like Citizen Kane cinema-wise.

I don't get at all why it might have been banned though, really can't see anything that remotely justify it.
