The one with the bird on the bird's nest is now my background. Awesome.

EDIT: If I was wanting to try my hand at amateur photogrpahy, where/how do I start? I have a camera but it's only point and shoot.

Beautiful shot, Flips. What kind of lens is that?

Last Soldier, the picture of the bird was actually taken with a point and shoot camera I had before I got a SLR. I actually just got some photography books from the library and started reading about things like aperture and shutter speed, then it's just trial and error. Does your camera have settings that say M, A, S, and P? If so, than you can do a lot of experimenting. To begin with, pracatice with just the portrait and landscape settings. Portrait will bring the subject into focus while blurring the background while landscape keeps everything in focus; the camera will automatically adjust the aperture and shutter speed for you. Once you get more comfortable with that, try finding running water and slowing down the shutter speed. Try shooting a sunrise/sunset. If you run into problems or have specific questions just post or pm me. I am by no means an expert, I think LittleWing and Fitzy take better pictures and C_B is certainly experienced as well.

I'm up in Massachusetts for the week visiting family. I went to Mount Holyoke College to take pictures and finally started playing with White Balance, and holy crap, what a difference it makes. I'll post some of my pics when I upload them.

Cheers, it was shot using the Sigma 70-300 APO HSM, a great lens for the price.

***edit***

I took this with the above lens as well

I've got loads of the F1 pics to go through and sort out, not had time yet :?

Thanks mate for the help.

I've got a Canon Digital IXUS 60. I've had the camera for nearly 2 years but I have never read the manual but I will soon. It's got features like potrait, night, digital macro, foilage, snow, beach etc. It also has this White Balance feature which you speak of.

Didn't you need a sizeable zoom to take it that close up though?

You also don't have photoshop.
Either way, I just don't want to come off as sort of a photography professional when I still have a lot to learn myself. I'm just opening the door to other people to step in when I give advice.

Not really. I got about 10-15 away and the zoom is pretty decent. Then I just held my elbows in and stood with my feet a little more than shoulder width apart. It also helps to make sure you are shooting at a decent shutter speed to avoid camera shake.

Thanks SSR and Fitzy.

That's just my standard AF-S DX 18-55mm lens, Flips. It was an overcast day and I finally started adjusting my white balance, set it to cloudy, and it made a huge difference.

Looks like a nice park CB. Thanks for the pics. I would have guessed fall was nearly over up north but it looks like you've still got some leaves yet to change.

I'll post some of my point-and-shoot shots from a park near Charlotte and the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden I visited last weekend.

I don't have photoshop (or skills) but I did mess with the contrast and color to get the red "redder" on this one (all the rest are raw, low res images uploaded to myspace).

whoa! awesome pics.

yea, prospect park is right down the street from me. it's really nice because unlike central park, in manhattan, it's very untraveled, so you can get lost in the woods and feel completely outside of the city life. i basically rolled myself a little joint, found a place to sit on a hill, got stoned, took in the sunset and enjoyed the quiet.
