Watching the teacher get so totally smoked in the opening sequence by the parachuters was pretty disturbing at such a young age, figure I was no more than 12 or so at the time.

Wow, there was never a thread for this movie until now? My mom rented this with me when I was like 10 years old, and I'll never forget it. I had nightmares about Commies parachuting into my school and killing my teacher for years afterward.
I'm convinced it's the reason I majored in History at university, too.

this is a movie you can't pass up on cable TV. I just hope the remake gets squashed.
Funny thing is it was just on cable (one of the ones here in Philly at least) within the last week. At least I'm pretty sure it was this movie, I saw briefly an outdoor scene with Lea Thompson and Powers Booth, they looked dressed up like soldiers.

For you guys who haven't seen this, be prepared that a lot of the love for it is nostalgia. The movie itself is pretty good, but not great. But as a teenager in the 80's, it was awesome.

yeah, this movie rules, but a lot of the appeal is remembering where you were in your life when you saw it for the first time. i think i was around 11 or so and i loved the shit out of it.
i'm sure the people (born after 1990 or so) who have never seen the goonies or stand by me would see those movies nowadays and not get it. red dawn is one of those movies.

No, it's really a great movie. The pacing is fantastic, it has a ton of great character actors playing secondary roles, and the primary roles are extremely well-acted. And it's pretty realistic, given the material. I mean, the fact that I had the same jacket as Charlie Sheen wears in the movie doesn't hurt, but regardlesss it's right up there with the best action movies of the eighties.

isn't it, or wasn't it, one of the bloodiest movies of all time or something?
