Pavement Brighten the Corners Reissue Info Unveiled
It's an even-numbered year, which means we're due for another deluxe reissue of a classic Pavement album from Matador/Domino. This time around, it's 1997's Brighten the Corners that gets the treatment, and Matador has just revealed the details of its reissue package.
Brighten the Corners: Nicene Creedence Ed. comes on two discs. Together they contain the remastered original LP, all of the B-sides and compilation tracks from around the album's original release, and previously unreleased studio and live tracks. The package also includes a 62-page book of photos, writings, and other nice things.
Matador will release Brighten the Corners: Nicene Creedence Ed. on November 18, and the label is currently working on a "Buy Early Get Now" promotion for the record with even more extras. Domino will handle the reissue's European release.
Finally, don't forget: Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks have those North American dates with Blitzen Trapper coming up pretty soon.

This should be really good. Brighten The Corners doesn't get enough credit in OB. These reissues have all been pretty solid, so I'll probably pick this one up.

Care to listen to more? depending on who you talk to in OB, the next step would obviously be either crooked rain, crooked rain or slanted and enchanted. If you like a poppy, alternative sound that's riff-heavy, I'd go CRCR. If you like word salad with wall of sound guitars, heavy on the noise, I'd go slanted.
Personally, I'd go slanted. But that's just me.
Wowee Zowee is great too, but it would be a crime to hear it and brighten the corners before the first two.

I'll be getting this the day it comes out. All my Pavement experiences have come via these reissues and I am really pleased by them

There are some shitty tracks, but I'm surprised at how many unreleased ones were actually really, really good. Especially the Slanted and Enchanted ones.

I think what I love most about Pavement is their spontaneity. It's like they will play a country western song and just go off in another direction, maybe some jazz or punk or just turn the guitars way up and let the feedback roar for like a minute. They stick to pop formats pretty well though, and Malkmus writes really good lyrics. Nothing feels forced or overwrought, I can listen to them in any mood, it's like they just take little bits of my favorite genres here and their and put them together in kind of a jam format.

While I enjoy bands like The Arcade Fire, with all of their bombast and multi instrumental production, I really applaud SM and Pavement for their slacker ethic. They just plug in and play. Even Wowee Zowee sounded effortless.

The Slanted and Enchanted reissue is a MUST for fans of the band or even just that particular album in general.
The other songs as well as the Peel sessions could have made a double album, none of them are throwaways. They're more straight-forward and cleaner-sounding, but all catchy with huge earth-scorching guitars. Just fucking awesome. And even though they refined their sound quite a bit on CR, the original drummer was so much better. Too bad they let him go.

The live versions on the second disc are GREAT, as expected.
Type Slowly has an extended jam in the midsection
