Just a little PSA for anyone who has concerns about the integrity of teh vote count from electronic voting machines or otherwise.
One of the errors that has been noted with voting machines is that people who choose a straight party ticket (where that choice is available) sometimes have their votes miscounted or not counted at all. And take not in teh story about the weird NORTH CAROLINA rule where you have to vote for president separately anyway.
Take the extra one minute to individually choose each candidate for each office on your ballot. It's a quick and easy way to make (more) sure that your votes will count.

I'm not convinced it's an issue. When I voted, every person being handed a ballot was reminded that "President is SEPARATE from the straight ticket." The ballot is even set up (with President at the top, and straight ticket under that) to reflect it. I can't believe it's going to be as big a problem as people claim. The ballot's been that way for 50 years and no one cared until now, when it might actually matter in the national election.

A friend of my girlfriend works for Vote Trust USA, which is pushing for electronic voting machines. They argue that they make voting more secretive and secure or some such, but I can't help but assume that they are heavily funded by Diebold and other vendors. What benefits of useability do electronic voting machines have over paper ballots? Do these benefits justify the money required?

ok, 2 things: - man you guys are voting for way too many things at once (neither in France or the UK we vote for national/regional/local/referendum elections all at once. rarely even 2 combined. they have different functions, with different issues, and mixing the voting means mixing the issues rather than making them clearer.) - why are most of those posts elected? either they should have nothing to do with politics (judges? Attorney? Auditor?) or should be selected by whoever is elected to run the main office (in the same way as the cabinet is). Now I can see some advantages in more direct elections in involving people more, but that advantage is lost by the 1st point..too much at the same time to give people (and candidates) time to make informed choices.

I agree that most of the offices should not be elected in the first place, but it is far cheaper to have one "general election" rather than multiple elections during the year. Plus, voter turnout is much higher the more important offices are up for election (president, congress, governor).
