(note I have not watched the interview yet)
I only just found out this morning on the radio (apparently Phoenix's birthday is today so they talked about him a bit) that he's had a reputation for awhile of being very difficult to work with. It was so on "Walk The Line", and they even talked to Mark Wahlberg themselves very recently and he told him that in their movie "We Own The Night" he didn't enjoy working with him at all.
I mean I figured he could be an... odd personality, but didn't necessarily think he could be an asshole on set.

So he is like ed harris pain in the ass caliber?
He did some good things with acting, his johnny cash portrail was amazing.
we own the night sucked balls. I guess he decided that was the end of the line for acting. he was probably a pain in the ass because he didn't necessarily enjoy it, or felt like he 'had' to do it.

straight from imdb...
- According to an interview with Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix would get into character by hurling insults at 'Robert Duvall (I)' between takes. This upset Duvall greatly and Wahlberg had to restrain him.
some actors choose a different path than others when it comes to getting into character. shit happens

edit: Holy shit was that Jerry Penicoli(sp?)??
yeah..the set of Gladiator must have been a barrel of laugh!!
re phoenix though, between his bizarre childhood and having his big bro pretty much dying in his arms, no wonder he's fucked up.
fucked up people make the best artists though, and he's a damn good actor.
