would you rather make less money and do what you love, or make more money and do something you don't quite like much? have any of you been faced with this decision before?

it depends on how much money we're talking about. if doing what you love makes you enough money to get by and have a little extra spending money, i'd choose that.

hm. i would certainly have to cut back a bit in terms of extra spending money, but then, i would be having paid dinners with famous philosophy, science and religion authors twice a week or so. i'd make enough to live, surely, and would have to tighten up a bit elsewhere.

no, but i may have found a way to be the new york city face of an organization that promotes free inquiry, science and reason, while writing about philosophy, science and religion, and meeting and discussing these issues with the most famous and best authors of books on these topics. or something like that.

So in other words, you'll be starting three times as many philosophical threads in N&D?
My advice would be to absolutely take the job you will love. The only factors to look at are: will you still be able to pay off any debt you have? I am underpaid for my job but I have vitually no debt, and I love what I do, and wouldn't leave for more money unless I would like the job as much. Or my wife was pregnant.

something else to consider is which job will provide you a better experience in terms of what you may want to do in the future and the kind of moves (careerwise) that you would like to make at some point. if the low paying job comes on top in this category too, i think it's a no brainer (even with less money)

it seems that this decision will have to be made by me soon.

Not an easy decision by any means. Make a pros and cons list.

You also have to consider the future... Like PD said, where will it take you 10 years from now? And a good question right now is, given the current economic problems, which job is more stable?
