<geek alert>
I admit it, I'm a Star Trek fan. I'm actually just a sci-fi fan in general. But I've always liked a lot of the idealism in Star Trek.
So, to display my geek side, I will now put in order the star trek shows and movies, from favorite to least favorite.
TV:
1. Next Gen.
2. TOS
3. DS9
4. Enterprise
5. Voyager
Movies:
1. Undiscovered Country
2. First Contact
3. Wrath of Khan
4. Voyage Home
5. Nemesis
6. Search For Spock
7. Generations
8. Insurrection
9. Final Fronteir
10. Motion Picture

hahahaha....that's the worst/best list I've ever seen! hahaha
I want to print that out and pin it up on my wall
I think the Wrath of Khan is the best movie they ever did, and I don't think it's been topped or ever will be. It's a great film that just happens to be a Star Trek movie. Aging, friendship, death, revenge, the circle of life, and other themes and elements all combined in a movie that sort of modernized the elements of the Star Trek franchise at the same time. And maybe the best performance Shatner ever gave.
3 was okay but not as good, and 4 is one of the more entertaining ones. "Double-dumb ass on you" is an unforgettable line.
The rest...meh. The Next Generation cast is pretty likeable and they did a couple of decent movies, but I think Star Trek is dead for the time being. I've never seen the other shows or casts like Voyager and all that stuff. I like Star Trek movies, but I'm not much into the trekkie stuff or the TV shows outside of that.

Buggy I agree right down the line with your assessment of the TV series, but I've got to stand up for The Motion Picture. It's not great, but it's not the worst, and I think that it is a highly underrated film. I didn't see it until I had seen a lot of other stuff because I had heard it was so bad, but I was pleasantly surprised by it.
Wrath of Khan is the best film, BTW, and I haven't seen all the movies and I get them mixed up if you don't put numbers on them.

I moved it way up after the Director's Edition came out. Better pacing, needless scences cut out. Way better FX. And that annoying computer voice is gone.
The concept , the visual awe, and excellent score make this thier epic.
I am pissed off that they cut the "we all create god our own image line." by Decker. But other than that the new DVD director;s edition is a great improvement.

One of the best things about it was that while it isn't the greatest movie ever made, it wasn't horrible either, and had a lot of box office success--enough for them to go ahead and make Wrath of Khan.

My big beef with TMP is that it tries to be too many things, and ends up being streatched too thin for me to really get into it. The film pacing is really bad (it is better in the directors cut, but it's still sub-par). It's not that it's a really slow movie (2001 is one of my all time fav movies), it just lacking in so many ways to keep my interest during the slow drawn out bits...which are often.
I suspect if it was ever redone and completely refilmed (which it will never be), that they could make a pretty good movie out of it. The basic concept is very doable, but it was like they screwed everything up in the process of doing it.
