so, i bought a d-link wireless router. set it all up no problem and it works fine when the comp is plugged into it, in fact i'm using it now. however, when i try to use a laptop with it wirelessly, it finds the connection, and connects to it, and tells me it is connected, but i can't browse any webpages.
any ideas before i toss it out the window and make it die in a fire?

first thing i'd do i switch the channel for your wireless router settings (i think the default is like channel 6, try channel 11). if you have another wireless device (like a 2.4 GHz cordless telephone) near the router sometimes it can interfere with the router signal.
you should be able to change your wireless router channel settings through your wireless router preferences. consult your user manual if you have one.

This happened with my moms desktop PC. We were tired of having ethernet cables running through the house so we bought a wireless router and her computer says it's connected but can't browse any webpages. So what me and my brother did was run a more inconspicuous ethernet cable to her computer and just told her everything worked fine. The wireless works great on my mac and my Wii.

probably not of help to you, but the same thing happened to me the other day (election night ). I wanted to use my laptop whilst watching the coverage rather than seat on the PC.
I could connect, but not load any pages (but I could see my PC on the same network, and connect to MSN). Tried pluging the ethernet on it and made no difference. I could browse normally on the desktop (same router). the setup had worked perfectly before and I couldn't think of anything I had changed that would affect this. I gave up because I didn't have time to spend on it.
Got an email from my ISP yesterday apologising about problems with their DNS servers...on that date!
my Desktop PC is setup to alternate DNS servers.. my laptop isn't works fine now (without having changed anything)

thanks everyone, i finally got it working just before giving up, heh. changed my settings to obtain an IP address automatically and voila!
now to figure out how to secure the connection so people can't leech off it...

you should be able to do that by going into your router's settings. there's just an ip address that you put in the address bar of your browser that gives you that. check your manual.

I'm currently at school and am having a tough time staying online. I am connecting via the library's wireless network. I keep on losing internet access, but the connection to the library network is maintained. It seems to randomly come and go and I can only reconnect after refreshing the connection numerous times. Is it possible that the router is over subscribed, seeing as there are hundreds of students here with their laptops?

did you change it from the default?
if not, the username is blank and the password i believe is admin
if you changed it and cant remember, youll have to reset the router. there should be a button you have to depress for 15 seconds with a pen or similar smaller object
once you do that, if you made any changes (ie opening ports, assign ip address, ip schemes etc) you will have to reset those

"It just works" my ass. My girlfriend got a shiny new airport and set up a network using WPA2, and I couldn't connect to her network. The message was something along the lines of, "the network rejected your connection" or some such. I am using Windows Vista. Any suggestions as to what I should try fiddling with?
Additionally, I had a similar problem with the wireless router integrated into her macbook but at some point that was inexplicably resolved. That connection still works, but that means that I don't have internet access at her house when she uses her XP partition.

it should not matter one iota what OS is being used, a router is a router. it all hinges on the connection type and if you have the correct passphrase/key to get on.
the router acts as its on machine on a network. you can log in using the interface by going to 192.168.1.1 (usually its default) and making sure you have the proper connection information.
my brother and i both use vista and my mom who lives two doors down is using xp and there have been no problems with her other than she just started using a computer
