This is somewhat of a stretch considering the law was meant for babies.
Teen abandoned under Neb. safe-haven law Unruly 18-year-old left at medical center under law intended for newborns
updated 9:02 a.m. MT, Mon., Nov. 10, 2008 LINCOLN, Neb. - Police say a woman has abandoned her 18-year-old daughter at a hospital, saying she can't control the girl, in what may be the latest use of Nebraska's unique safe-haven law.
The woman told officials at BryanLGH Medical Center West that her daughter, who was adopted, is bipolar and has a learning disability, Assistant Police Chief Jim Peschong said Monday.
"The adoptive mother says that the daughter refused to take some medication for some conditions that she has," Peschong said. "She won't listen to her, can't control her."
Peschong said the daughter was placed in state custody.
If the young woman's status is confirmed by the state, she would be the 30th child abandoned under Nebraska's safe-haven law since it went into effect in July. A spokeswoman for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services did not return a call seeking comment Monday.
Nebraska was the last state to enact a safe-haven law, intended to protect unwanted newborns from being abandoned.
Some have interpreted the state's law as meaning it could apply to children as old as 18, because it uses the word "child" and doesn't specify an age limit.
Some have taken the word "child" to mean "minor," which in Nebraska includes anyone under the age of 19. Others use the common-law definition, up to age 14. State Department of Health and Human Services officials say another state law pertaining to juveniles will not let authorities take in children older than 17.
As lawmakers prepare to tweak Nebraska's much-criticized safe-haven law, which allows parents to abandon kids as old as 18, they'll find no nationwide consensus on what the age limit should be.
Nebraska was the last state to enact a safe-haven law, a measure intended to prevent infanticide and the unsafe abandonment of newborns.
But since the law took effect in July, none of the children dropped off were newborns and three of them from out of state. The reason: Nebraska's law provides safe haven for any "child." It doesn't set an age limit.

I heard a story about this on NPR. It blew my mind. They said parents have been bringing in kids up into their teens. Sometimes they tell the kids what they're doing, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they bring the kid's possessions, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they leave medications, sometimes they don't.
I mean wow! The woman was talking about 5 year olds crying and begging their parents not to leave them as their parents just walk out the door. I can't fathom how evil a person has to be to walk away from their crying, begging child, never to return.

It's too bad abortion doesn't work on teens. I even tried a Dyson.
BTW, Philip K. Dick wrote a fucking spectacular story about this topic called "The Pre-Persons", in which congress declares a 'person' doesn't become a 'person' until the soul enters the body, which they defined as the time the thing in question understands basic algebra, and thus abortion of a child is legal until that point and kids can be collected by an ice cream and taken to the pound like stray dogs if their parents don't want them anymore.

Girl Runs During Safe Haven Attempt Girl, Brother To Be 32nd, 33rd Safe Haven Children
POSTED: 5:19 pm CST November 13, 2008 UPDATED: 10:08 am CST November 14, 2008
OMAHA, Neb. -- Police are looking for a 17-year-old girl after she ran off when she realized her mother was taking her to a hospital to drop her off under the Safe Haven law.
According to Methodist Hospital staff, the girl ran off before reaching the emergency room. Her 14-year-old brother stayed. He's now in state custody.
Thursday's developments were the latest twist in a political and social saga that has brought national attention to Nebraska and brought parents from the nation's four corners to local hospitals to drop off their own kids.
From Miami to Michigan and from Atlanta to Arizona, with Indiana in the middle, desperate parents have seemingly rushed their unruly children to the state before lawmakers convene on Friday to change the law.
Investigators also said a 5-year-old boy was dropped off at Omaha's Immanuel Medical Center around 9 p.m. Thursday.
Thursday's incident marks the 24th, 25th and 26th cases of a parent or guardian abandoning children under the law. The two teens and the boy are the 32nd, 33rd and 34th children to be left at Nebraska hospitals since the law took effect in July.

I never heard of this law until this thread highlighted people abusing it. How did all of these people from all over the country find out about it? Is there a message board for terrible parents who hate their kids or something?

Meh. It won't be around much longer in any useful form.

30-Day Safe Haven Age Limit Gets 2nd-Round Approval Governor May Sign Bill By Monday
POSTED: 12:18 pm CST November 19, 2008 UPDATED: 10:55 am CST November 20, 2008
OMAHA, Neb. -- A 30-day age limit on the state's Safe Haven law appears to be headed for final approval.
By a vote of 41-6, the state Legislature Wednesday morning approved the age limit in the second round of debate. A final vote is expected Friday and then the bill will go to Gov. Dave Heineman. He said he would support a 30-day age limit.
Sen. Phil Erdman said it gets back to the true intent of the Safe Haven law.
"It's an emergency. An emergency happens when children drop off their children in rivers or in a Dumpster. And all those cases in Nebraska have been under 30 days," Erdman said on Tuesday.
But others argued the age limit should be considerably older or none at all.
"I can't distinguish between the value of a 5-year-old and the value of a 3-day-old. I can't do it," said Sen. Tom White.
Sen. Dwite Pedersen said passing a bill that caps the age at 30 days will be passing a bill that abandons a lot of teenagers.
Every state has a safe-haven law meant to protect newborns, but Nebraska's is the only one that lacks an age limit. Most of the 35 children dropped off at Nebraska hospitals since the law took effect in July have been preteens or teenagers as old as 17.
