I'm a bit confused as to why songs that were released a year and a half ago are nominated this year..

Mysteries Abound!
Has there ever been this many established artists up for a soundtrack grammy before?

This is not for soundtracks. It's Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.

I'm especially suprised then.

not the song I would have picked but I'm thrilled to see him get the recognition I think he deserves

can someone explain this to me? isnt this song, while awesome, like 45 years old?
I looked up this latest album to see if he had re-recorded the song or something but nope, it wasn't on it. That is strange...
It's a live EP from an in-store performance. I haven't heard a clip so I don't know if he re-interpreted the song or not. It would be lame if he didn't and got nominated for a live performance of a song he wrote 40 some years ago.
