Wondered what you guys all think of using auto tune or harmony software on your recordings? Is it something you flat out rule out?

They're mostly a substitute for vocal talent.

Really, Autotune is in about 90% of released albums anymore, even by big name singers who recorded for years without it. I like imperfection, myself.

i like alot of lofi stuff in general, so i'm not a big fan of any autotune. most of my favourite singers don't need it or wouldln't have the same character or would sound bad with it. though i'm sure it could make me sound better.

if it sounds good, i'm for it. i don't use it or want to use it, but its a tool to make music. i think i value the imagination over the performance, i mean vocals are getting treated and edited in every other way, i don't see why changing the pitch is any different than timing. (producers probably are making pitch changes without telling the artist too during editing.) i'm not a fan of the weird sound it sometimes causes. i'd rather learn how to master my voice though.

I guess I'm more thinking of it in this way, I was playing around with a song I was writing the other night and have never been able to land on the notes I was after, i used the autotune to knock it in and it sounded not bad. So I've now learned the melody and resung it so it sounds OK.

It just occurred to me that maybe it isn't so different to tuning your guitar with an electronic tuner?

i wrote a song out of my range, it took me a year to finally get my voice where i can sing it. autotune would have been nice, but now i can sing it.

Mine was more about not hitting notes in the middle, it doesn't sound like Akon or anything but I (probably) wouldn't use it on anything I released. With this particular song I was having trouble because the verse in is G and the chorus Eb... excuses, excuses :)
