A new kid named Gary Harrison moves to South Park with his family from Utah. The children immediately are mean to him being that he is both "the new kid" and that he has accomplished so much already in his life (state champion in two sports and starred in two commercials). Out on the playground the boys make fun of him and encourage Stan to beat him up. He is hesitant but proceeds anyway. After talking to him he is taken aback by Gary's kindness and instead goes to his house for dinner that night instead. At the Harrison's Stan sees a family that gets along and spends time together as opposed to fighting and being miserable like his family. They are all happy and play games and encourage each other in their endeavors. Eventually they begin scripture reading and Stan questions what the Book of Mormon is and who Joseph Smith is and they flashback to a story about him. (Many people believed Joseph. Dumb dumb dumb dumb dumb ) After the story is finished Stan goes home and finds his own family unhappily sitting around the TV and he questions why he never was told about Mormonism. Eventually Randy gets angry that Mr. Harrison is seemingly telling his son what to believe and vows to go "kick his ass". After Randy talks to him he too is taken aback by the Harrisons' kindness and he himself is told another part of the Joseph Smith story. Back at home Randy talks to his wife about Joseph Smith and declares that from that point on their family is Mormon. The next day Stan's friends tease him about the time he is spending with Gary and Stan tries to distance himself from Gary. When the Harrison's come over for dinner at the Marsh's, Stan declares he does not believe the teachings of Joseph Smith and declares that it's stupid to believe something that someone simply "says" is true. The next day Gary tells off Stan for not being his own person and having his own beliefs and eventually tells him to suck his balls, which immediately makes him "cool".

I really like how this show doesn't really hold anything back when making fun of everything. This is just another in a long line of social commentary. When isaac hayes quit because of the scientology episode, he only showed how irrational that religion can make you act because it was ok to be a part of the show when they would attack catholics, mormons, jews, etc... but get mad because your religion which happens to be just as if not more ridiculous as the ones being skewered is now finally the butt of the joke.

Maybe it's because I'm from Utah, but this is one of my all time favorite episodes. The portrayal of the Joe Smith story is pretty much spot on, as it's been a source of jokes and jabs among the non-LDS population here for years.
But I didn't like it just because of the Mormons, I liked it because it was witty and well done, especially the music, which the SP team pretty much always does well. I'm glad Stan and family didn't end up having to stay Mormon though.
