This thread never took off and I'm not sure what the dead link went to but I thought I'd use this thread to remind any/all photographers that the moon will be spectacular tonight. Maybe someone will post some pics?

I posted a pic of the moon I took the other month in dscans thread, It's been raining here for the past few hours so I'm not gonna be able to take any pics of the moon tonight unfortunately, I was looking forward to it as well

Ok, I give up. All my moon photos came out like crap. The moon comes out so bright I can't make out any of the details even when I turn the ISO down. I know it probably hurts that I'm not shooting with a tripod and I have to use a slow shudder speed, but I feel like I am missing something. How do you do it, Flips?

A tripod is absolutely essential when photographing the moon. I took this sequence last year with just one of those 6 inch tripods that fit in a camera bag. I found my best shots resulted from using the camera in RAW mode so i was able to tweak my exposure levels in the comfort of my computer room instead of outside in the -20C weather.

mike's right, a tripod is necessary when shooting the moon.

Thanks for the advice guys, I've been meaning to get a tripod for a while now. Are we actually doing this? Anyone else posting a moon pic (Ben?).
You get a flickr account yet, ceebs? We could probably start a RM group on there.
i don't really know how flickr works, i'll probably look at it this week. what do you mean by an RM group?

As has just been said, a tripod is a must, I also shot in RAW to give me more control in post processing. The shooting mode was set to self timer to eliminate any possibilty of camera shake, although I have just picked up a remote for my camera which will be used from now on.
The moon I posted before was shot at 300mm with an aperture of 5.6 and a shutterspeed of 1/160
i just found it was a case of trial and error at first.

You know how Mirella started that RM group in last FM? It's like the same thing. But I guess it's really the same as us posting our pictures here. Just a place for like-minded individuals to share picturs.

I've been thinking about having the photographers here just post pictures of their neighborhood in a thread. We have so many people post so far from different parts of the world, I think it would be cool if people posted pics conveying their neighborhood to give a taste of that area. We have NYC, Wilmington, the Appalachians, Austrailia, London, the Great Lakes... I think we could do a lot.
Are you guys with me?
