Just about finished watching tPM and have a question:

Obi and Qui Gon can run at super duper Jedi speed (as demonstrated in the first five minutes of the film), so when they are facing off against Darth Maul and they are separated by the energy gates why doesn't Obi employ that same Jedi speed to re-enter the fray instead of just running along at normal Ewan McGregor footspeed?

This has to be a goof, yeah? :?

I'd thought about that before too. But I think it can be explained by the fact that while they can use the force to move very fast, they aren't like superman--the force powers can't be used constantly like that, and they can only use so much at once as it can be draining. Obi Wan was in the midst of battle and had just taken a very hard, long fall--and then he force jumped quite a distance back up.
As for getting caught behind the forcefield a second time, maybe force-running right into a battle like that could be dangerous if he's somewhat drained afterwards. That's my explanation/rationalization anyway. 8)

I always figured that Obi-Wan didn't have the super speed was because he was afraid those gates would turn on again and he'd be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Or he just couldn't focus enough, so he dragged ass.

i thought he ran at a normal rate to build suspense. that's an old trick that is often used in movies and books. i have a different question about that scene. why didn't qui gon disappear when he died like obia wan and yoda did? that just builds confusion.

I thought I read a George Lucas interview that said he had a reason why this didn't happen and it would be revealed in the future. So...he basically has the next film to explain it....not to mention redeem himself entirely.

*geek alert*

I heard the reason that Qui-Gon didn't disappear was because he wasn't yet ready to become one with the Force.

Obi-Wan knew it was his time when fighting Vader on the Death Star, so he surrendered himself. Yoda was getting old, and he was ready to pass. So they both disappeared.

You'll notice none of the Jedi that died on Geonosis in Attack of the Clones disappeared, because they too weren't ready to pass.

Clearly not the point of the thread, though, is it?

Qui-Gon, as you will see in the next film, is VERY important to the OT. He's the first Jedi able to do _________ (I don't want to spoil it). In fact, he teaches it to Yoda and Obi Wan. In case you never heard it, listen very closely to the scene where Anikan slaughters the Tusken Raiders in Ep 2. Then you can put 2 + 2 together. If Lucas leaves the Qui Gon scenes for Ep 3 on the cutting room floor I'll be pissed.

Yeah, I always thought he didnt do the run because #1 he might run straight into the giant hole in the middle of the floor or because #2 the movie sucked hardcore anal cavities.

Oh.

I think I'm getting an idea, but I'm trying to stay away from plot spoilers. I'll look at pictures, but I don't want to know how they fit together.

This is my reply to any and all questions of this type:

It's a sci-fi movie. People are doing all sorts of crazy shit that would never happen. Why does a small error matter?

Because it's Star Wars.

Doesn't matter. Arguing about wee errors is stupid regardless of the film.

Man, I am definately watching Ep. 1 tonight. This thread really got me in the mood.

For the casual SW fan who isn't aware: The Ep 3's Opening Crawl is available on the official site. It's pretty spoiler free unless you plan on watching the next season of the Clone Wars on the Cartoon Network.
