Some are personality actors rather than the actual character actor. Nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't knock Jack Nicholson and Tom Hanks and say they're always playing themselves in every movie. They have such good charisma that they can adapt to material and make themselves look fresh and unique. As long as they can keep doing that, and not many can, I believe they fall under great actors.

Have you read an interview with him? He actually isn't that far from his public persona. I remember one in which he talked about never eating during daylight and spending hours on end on the treadmill. Also they accompanied him shopping for vegetables, which was great as I recall.

i thought this thread was about actors who are actually, in the movie or TV show, who they really are in real life (i.e., jerry seinfeld), and not about actors who merely don't change character through different characters. but i suppose either can apply and the latter has more potential.
