So, my sneaky ass boyfriend went on Ebay and spent probably WAYWAYWAY too much and got me a Kindle for Christmas, so I wouldn't have to wait til they went off backorder til like. . . March (thanks, Oprah). So now, I've got like, $300 saved up, and an empty kindle.

not a bad list! I like Don DeLillo a lot but i didn't enjoy Cosmopolis very much. Underworld is a great, but lengthy, read. White Noise is easily my favorite though.

I've only read White Noise but I loved it.

The text display on this thing looks easier on the eyes than others I have seen. If it can successfully reproduce the appearance of the printed page digitally, I'd love to get my hands on one of these.

It's still the first version, which I'm more than happy with.
The screen looks, I'd say, 95% like a real sheet of paper. It's a bit grayer - kind of like reading an older paperback as aposed to a bright shiny new one. It's very easy on the eyes, and you can adjust the print size. There's no backlighting, or built in light, so like a real book, you need a booklight to read in the dark.
I was against them for a long time, until I ran out of bookshelf room, and realized how irritating it is to carry around 2 700 page novels because i'm almost done one and want to get to the other ASAP.
Most new releases through Amazon.com are $10. I downloaded 3 books already, all were $6. You can also shop and download them instantly via the cell phone network from anywhere, no extra charge. There's a basic web browser, and a music folder that plays mp3s for you on random while you read.
It's actually VERY comfortable to hold, especially vs a long Sunday splurge with a giant hardback novel. It weighs less than a paperback. The battery lasts really long, I've read a novel and a half since Christmas eve, and played music all night last night while reading, and the battery is still at about 80%.

have you read The Road? if so how was it? I haven't started it yet but heard it was good...
No but I've read No Country for Old Man and All The Pretty Horses. NCFOM is sparse McCarthy and ATPH is dense McCarthy, and both were absolutely incredible. NCFOM gave me chills and ATPH...made me cry. McCarthy is a god.

Nope. I read for 4 hours straight last night, didn't notice any difference. It was nice at my boyfriend's house, I read by the light of his video game without a problem, just made the text bigger.
I like the actual books, too. But right now, I just have no ROOM to support the habit. I know there's the library and all that jazz, but my library is terrible and my time to go is worse. I also like to re-read books a LOT, so this way I still have them forever.

I can dig this. I don't buy books anyway - I either borrow them from the library or friends/family or get them from work. Therefor cost aint a thang and I'd much rather have a hard copy of a book than an E-book.
