Facebook Users Protest Breast-Feeding Image Policy

A mass online protest movement is gathering pace after Facebook banned some breastfeeding photos from the social-networking Web site.

Angry mothers even picketed the Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif., in a live "nurse-in" to complain about a ban on photos of mothers suckling their children that exposed too much of the mother's breast.

Hundreds of women have had their pictures removed without warning and have been informed that they may be barred from using the site.

More than 80,000 people have joined a Facebook petition group called "Hey Facebook, Breast-Feeding is Not Obscene" with hundreds joining every hour.

More than 11,000 women from around the world took part in an online "nurse-in" protest on Saturday by posting more breastfeeding pictures. The protest's organizers reported that many have since had these photos removed from the site.

Facebook has said that it has no problem with breastfeeding but photos that showed nipples or areolas were indecent and had to be removed.

Barry Schnitt, a Facebook spokesman, said the Web site takes no action over most breast-feeding photos because they follow the site's terms of use.

"We agree that breast-feeding is natural and beautiful and we're very glad to know that it is so important to some mothers to share this experience with others on Facebook," said Schnitt.

The idea of a live "nurse-in" protest at the Facebook headquarters is ridiculous to me. Actually the whole thing is kind of ridiculous. Facebook has the authority to determine what content gets posted on their site, and they've said they are taking down pictures that show too much. Instead of fighting Facebook's policies perhaps these women should interact on some other breastfeeding/motherhood forums, of which there are probably many.

I'd create a forum for it, but then I'd be accused of plagiarism.

I don't care either way, but what is with some women's bizarre insistance on ensuring that the world can watch them breastfeed anytime, anywhere? Seems like every year there's a story about a group of women protesting War Mart or Red Lobster or some other random place bc a woman was politely asked to refrain from doing it in the store.

I wouldn't want to watch you eat but I guess they wouldn't kick you out of Red Lobster if I complained.

It's dumb to take the pictures down and it's dumb to get upset about it if they do...people are dumb...always getting all worked up about meaningless shit. Facebook all worried that 13 year olds around the country are gonna start jerking it cause they see half a nipple and Moms all upset that they can't share pics of their dumb kids sucking on their ugly boobs....waaaaaa.....

you don't get to pick when your baby is hungry. you kind of have to go out of your way to look at it if you're eating/shopping. that's not the mother's fault.

I have no problem with women breastfeeding in public, but I don't understand why someone would need to post pictures of themselves breastfeeding on a social networking site.

Also, there are no breast pumps to help address this.

Actually, I'm 100% in the "let's get over nudity" thing. But I'm always confused by the sit-ins. Facebook won't let you show pics of your booby? There are other social networking places that will, and you could probably convince some of your friends to switch with you. That might actually matter to the site more than giving their higher-ups the chance to check out your tits on the way out to lunch. No promises, but it's got better odds of effecting change.

That's about the size of it, folks.

Agreed. My ex-wife had some professional pictures taken when our son was born, and she was breastfeeding in one of them, but it's not like she posted them all over the internet. They were for us, the family, to remember that time of our lives.

I don't get to choose when I have to take a piss either, but I can't just whip it out and pee into a cup wherever I am at any given time.

Have you tried using a backpack?

HUNDREDS of women put of pictures of their kids sucking on their tits? Jesus. I think that posting pics like that was probably just people TRYING to start trouble.

I understand being able to comfortably (yet discreetly - use a blanket!) feed your children in public. It's natural, and people need to get over themselves. If a woman is sitting on a bench in the mall feeding her baby with a blanket covering as much as possible, that's fine. I'm not at all against it.

But who takes a PICTURE of that? REALLY? And then POSTS it!?! Don't most people take and post pictures of them and their children looking good, and cute, and etc? Who the fuck looks good with one tit hanging out? And who wants to see the back of your baby's head?
