This starts in 20 minutes on MSNBC, of all places. Has anyone seen it? It's gotten pretty rave reviews.
Spoiler free synopsis from rotten tomatoes:
DEAR ZACHARY: A LETTER TO A SON ABOUT HIS FATHER is not for the faint of heart. Filmmaker Kurt Kuenne's excruciatingly powerful documentary begins as a memorial to a lost friend, Andrew Bagby, who was brutally murdered in 2001 by a crazed ex-girlfriend. Yet as Kuenne traveled the globe to interview friends and family of the beloved young doctor, Bagby's killer, Shirley Turner, fled to Newfoundland to escape arrest. Under the backwards protection of the Canadian law, she was allowed to remain free...
My fiancee was tears by the end of this documentary. It's part tribute to a murdered friend, part plea for legal reform in Canada. I won't spoil anything, but the parents of the murder victim have got to be amongst the most inspirational 'normal' people you will ever see on film. I have no idea how they were able to do what they did and keep it up for so long. The frustration and rage and honesty with which they spoke to the filmmaker, the murder victims childhood best friend, was shocking. It's well worth seeing if it airs again.

This movie just ruined my life a little bit. I'm glad I didn't see it on TV or in a theater or something, because I wouldn't have been able to get through it without being able to pause and splash some water on my face. Tragic and fascinating.
I vaguely remembered some details of the case on Canadian news from years back but I had forgotten the main details. So when I saw this for the first time a few weeks ago, I was a crying mess. The style is so fast-paced and there are so many people interviewed, you'd think it would be a confusing mess, but somehow the director is able to make it all come together and it works.
And I don't know what else can be said about the parents except they are two unbelievably, amazingly strong people. I don't know how they did it...
