This could be in the news department but whatever...

My father is the Chief Deputy of the Fond du Lac, Wisconsin Police department. He just called and notified me of an incident this morning on the outskirts of the county where a husband shot his wife as she ran for the outside door, and he shooting himself afterwards. Cops arrived just seconds seconds later after the woman called. Both dead.

We also found the body of a 16-21 year old girl in a wooded area back in November. Found by some hunters. Body half buried under a frozen creek bed.

I had to get this out. Disturbing. This is only a town of 42,000.

I was sheriff of this county when I was twenty-five years old. Hard to believe. My grandfather was a lawman; father too. Me and him was sheriffs at the same time; him up in Plano and me out here. I think he's pretty proud of that. I know I was. Some of the old time sheriffs never even wore a gun. A lotta folks find that hard to believe. Jim Scarborough'd never carry one; that's the younger Jim. Gaston Boykins wouldn't wear one up in Camanche County. I always liked to hear about the oldtimers. Never missed a chance to do so. You can't help but compare yourself against the oldtimers. Can't help but wonder how theyd've operated these times. There was this boy I sent to the 'lectric chair at Huntsville Hill here a while back. My arrest and my testimony. He killt a fourteen-year-old girl. Papers said it was a crime of passion but he told me there wasn't any passion to it. Told me that he'd been planning to kill somebody for about as long as he could remember. Said that if they turned him out he'd do it again. Said he knew he was going to hell. "Be there in about fifteen minutes". I don't know what to make of that. I sure don't. The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job. But, I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He'd have to say, "O.K., I'll be part of this world."

I recognized it from the movie, but knew it must be from the book. The movie is incredible, so it stands that the book is probably better.

Mick, what did you think of the movie as an adaptation?

I saw the movie first and then read the book, because the movie was so good. The movie is really faithful to the book, but seeing the movie first didn't take anything away from it--the writing is absolutely incredible. For the most part the prose is really sparse and fast paced and then all of a sudden--WHAM--he pulls out passages like this. My whole body had chills when I finished it.

So basically you need to read it.

Yeah it's an awesome book by itself but the sherrif's passages are just haunting. The end....

i read the road earlier this year, which was absolutely great, epsecially stylistically, which made me want to watch this movie. i might read this book next, or i might do blood meridian, since i've heard great things about it and i don't know the story.
