The very first time I heard pearl jam was when, after wading through songs on my cousin's computer I found two pearll jam songs - Alive and DTE. I have and always will love tese songs simply because they were my first expirience, you never forget the first time But after having listen to pearl jam so intensivly in hte eyars since then I have seem the fall from grace that is Eddie's voice. Alive is a testament to the deep, controled baratone that drew so many people into the band, DTE, while one of my favours is just one of the songs that has ripped his voice to shreds. Now be it because of anger, testosterone, frustration or whatever Eddie decided that from then on in, live performaces adn studio work that he would growl. Songs like: all of Vs. excluding daughter and indifference, STBC, Last Exit, Not For You, LUKIN (bad bad bad) etc. I lament the fact that Eddie never recieved professional training from someone that could teach him to sing without destroying his voice. Well iv had my rant, anyone else have an opinion?

He's had training....there is a vocal coach who claims him as one of his customers....Chris Cornell too. All singers lose their voices(esp rock singers) as they age....or at least they change. Smoking didn't help.

Judging by his live performances, especially the solo tour he either has a vocal coach or he doesn't need one.

Better than he has in a long time at any rate. Society and Hard Sun are terrific vocal performances

Regardless of how you feel about the SOUND of his voice, and whether or not its better or worse than before, the degree of warbling he does in concert is a pretty clear indication that he doesn't have a lot of training in how to protect his voice from wear and tear. His breathing technique is less than stellar, too.
I definitely prefer his singing style on Into the Wild to the S/T record.

I don't agree at all with the first post. As far as studio albums are concerned, I think he sounds great on all of them. I mean, he sounds a bit older on the later records, but that's for obvious reasons. I would not say that his quality has diminished.
Now as far as live performances go, I actually like the way he sings even MORE now. But I think it's a style issue. He seems more comfortable out there. Plus, he has to sing in whatever way comes naturally now since he's out there every night learning to play guitar.

I'm not sure about that. He has a natural warble today. It's not a wobble. It's probably healthier for him to sing this way than to clamp down on his vocal chords in order to obtain a straight singing tone. He was a clamper back in his early days.

Love Reign O'er Me should've put to rest any debate over whether or not Eddie could still scream. That recording was incredible.
He still sounds great on record, be it on hard rockers or mellow songs and he's allowed to be imperfect in concert. As long as he's in tune, he'll sound good.

Eddie also received a lot of vocal education from Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in 1995. I remember reading that he changed some of his techniques after working with Nusrat. I think a difference can be heard from in 1995 and 1996 recordings.

His voice in Into the Wild soundtrack is great, in Avocado not really. He simply does better when he isnt trying to hard.
