i really want this movie to be good. i read the book years ago and loved the shit out of it. judging by the previews, it seems too colorful and i'm worried that the filmmakers are going to miss the mark by making it less dark than the source material

I've been watching a lot of the 'behind the scenes' bits on You Tube, and it looks like they get the dark in there pretty good, too. Neil seems REALLY happy with it, and how they were able to capture a lot of his discripitions, so I guess that's a good gauge. There's one extra character, a little boy from the neighborhood, mostly so Coraline wouldn't just be talking to herself for half the movie, but that seems to be the biggest deviation.
The new Real D shit is mindblowing. I saw Bloody Valentine last weekend and was seriously impressed. (The movie was actually better than I expected it to be as well!) Seeing the preview for this made my whole night, though.

yeah, i saw MBV last week as well. I'd never seen a 3d movie before and it was pretty sweet. I have really high expectations for this movie, but if Gaiman loves it, i'll probably like it

I'd never heard of this movie in the slightest until seeing a billboard ad for it in my area just a couple weeks ago. And it was pretty sparse, but based on the imagery I'd gotten the sense it was like a real darkish horror movie (it certainly wasn't obvious to me that the movie wasn't live action).

OK...so I went to see My Bloody Valentine 3D & this movie was previewed...in 3D. It was awful! Anytime there was movement faster than a slow walk it was blurry & distorted. the 3D gimmicks in the preview were lame, and everything was too dark. I hope it was a rough draft...but why would it be? why not showcase the 3D at it's best.
Side Note: The 3D in MBV was shitty too. Except for the 5 min long sex/nudity scene it had all been done before.

Hmm. I wonder if it was the copy or the theather? I had the opposite experience. The preview for Coraline was AMAZING - very crisp and clear, but the MOVIE was kind of blurry and not very clear with fast movements.
I was assuming that maybe they decided post-shooting to make MBV 3D, where Coraline was filmed with the RealD cameras from the start. But honestly, I have no idea how they filmed MBV.
I guess they're still ironing the kinks on on this RealD shit. . .

mbv was filmed in realD, you can't do it in post. I was at the newest of new cinemas in Mass. I hope it looks better on release, because the movie itself looked entertaining.

Ahhh, gotchya. I guess they do Nightmare Before Christmas 3D differently. I thought that was in RealD too, maybe it's traditional 3d. Or they reshot the entire thing? (doubtful) lol

It cant be worse than Star Dust. I cant believe what they did to one of the best books i've ever read.
