Man, I hope so. I've been posting resumes to every fucking job all week. I have about 2 weeks worth of buffer before I have to sell my ass to keep up with shit.

How much? I think given2trade is looking to buy.

On a more serious note: Hang in there! Chin up!

I know I'm not alone, particularly these days, but it still sucks. I knew I wasn't absolutely safe, but it was still a surprise, and I am very unprepared. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do in this situation.

Keep pounding the pavement, and start shedding the extra bills that aren't necessary, like cable TV.
Your local unemployment office will probably be a good place to visit too.
Get your claim started as soon as possible, and check to see if they have a jobs database you can look through.

Try and stay positive, but be realistic.

I have no idea!
You should probably do some research and see what your competitors are charging.

The problem is that my last job was 1099 (contract) so no unemployment for me. I've been hitting the houston chronical and craigslist pretty hard this week. I think I sent out about 50 or 60 resumes so far. I've gotten some hits, but mostly from the bottom feeder companies. Not that I'm above selling roofing jobs, but I need a paycheck I can count on that doesn't involve lying to people.

1099? Ouch. And it's tax season. That's gotta hurt.

Been there, done that. All you can do is take whatever job you can.

Wish I was more help. :(

No worries. Just the fact that people give a shit is more help than you can imagine. It helps knowing that there are folks out there that are at least sensitive to the whole thing, ya-know?

I think more and more people are going to become more sensitive to the situation on the whole in the coming months and years. It's pretty damn scary to be honest.

I'm back in school now, and given the current economic landscape I'm hoping there will be a job for me once I'm done. :shake:
How depressing it will be if I end having to work at the Geek Squad the rest of my life.

I have a friend in IT in Dublin (government job) and he just took a healthy pay cut. In fact, I haven't responded to the vent in my email inbox yet, because I don't know how to console him.

For some reason I don't think "Lovely day for a Guinness" is going to help lift his spirits much.

But hey! We're all in this boat together, kind of sort of!

You're absolutely right. I'm really not looking for pity. I just wanted to vent too. I haven't totally exhausted my resources just yet, I just figured I'd let off a little steam. Although, as far as your friend is concerned, the Guiness thing may not be a bad idea.

If your close by, I'd take him out for a few just to soften the sting.

All public servants in Ireland have to take a pay cut. It's not a pay cut, you understand: it's a levy (tax) on your pension. (Sarcasm is oozing from the keyboard as I type, by the way). I'm gettin' a cut, too. All the nurse's hard industrial action a couple of years ago didn't amount to us gaining much at all, and now we're losing more than that.

Someone wrote in the paper the other day saying 'I wish I earned as much as a public servant, even with their pay cut'. Yeah, well, fuck you. I work Saturdays, Sundays, Christmas Day, ALL my shifts are 12 hours long, and when I do nights, I do Monday to Monday 8pm to 8am (that's an 84 hour week, by the way, but we do get the whole following week off). Am I complaining? No. I like my hours. But don't fucking harangue us for our pay scale when we gotta work what most people consider shit hours and shit days (like Christmas, New Year, public holidays etc).

Now the rant's over, here's the constructive part  :

I empathise with you, though, Five, and hope it all works out. Look at it this way: if you didn't like your job, now's the time to try and do something you DO want to do.

If you've had your previous job for a while, it might be beneficial to look up interview techniques and the latest, most up-to-date way to present your resume, too.

I'm not close-by. But I'm sure his lady will help soften the sting. ;)
he and I usually just discuss Beavis & Butthead and server technology.

Oh and we always keep each other updated on the Japanese game shows.
You might get a good laugh out of this and maybe that will help soften your sting!

I'm sorry  This is a tough economy and will only get much worse the next 1-2 years. Please find work ASAP and don't be too picky.

Yeah, I'd tell that someone to fuck off too. Long hours indeed. Hopefully things will get better before they get worse. My sarcastic friend says this: "And a happy new year to you too Mr. Cowen!!"
