This morning my Mom was out walking our 10-year old black lab, Meg, who has been a part of our family since she was less than a year old. Meg is an alpha dog so she likes to bark. They were walking on the sidewalk and a dog starts barking at Meg, Meg barks back. This dog whom my Mom identified as a pitbull charges Meg and immediately knocks her over and gets ready to bite her. Before the pitbull can bite the owner comes out and calls the dog back.

Now according to my Mom this guy is in his late 40s or early 50s, has a short haircut and looks like ex-military. After the fact, I look up his address and he's got a pickup, SUV, and American flag in his front yard. So anyway my Mom tells him he should have his dog on a leash. The guy says "This is my property and my dog doesn't leave it, lady". My Mom replies "well your dog just attacked my dog right here on the sidewalk". To which the man replies, "walk on the street, lady". My Mom walked away.

Just as my Mom was getting home I happened to wake up and as soon as I left my room she tells me this story. Of course, I was about to blow a gasket, and I immediately started to get dressed, putting on my combat boots and fatigues. We ended up agreeing that I wouldn't go down there if she called the police, which she did. They are sending animal control.

That asshole is fucking lucky he didn't hurt Meg. He is even lucker I wasn't walking my dog, who is a Dobermann (but very friendly). If I see a pitbull running towards me or my dog, that thing is going to have so many broken bones they will have no choice but to put it down.

I am still burning to go talk to the guy and tell him how big of a man he is, scaring away semi-old women. I'd like to have a go at the fucker but he probably has a shotgun collection the size of a small military arsenal. Fucking coward.

I don't get this new no-leash fad. Mostly it's small dogs but some people are just letting their labs run around free when they go out for walks. I know you watch the Dog Whisperer and he makes you think you're an expert, but it's a dog. Put it on a leash.

Perhaps your dog shouldnt have barked back at a dog on its own yard.
As an "alpha dog" as you stated, maybe your mother should take more care where shes walking him, as he obviously isnt well trained enough to not instigate at an inappropriate moment.

You seem to suggest that dog owners shouldn't expect to walk down the street without being attacked. That somehow a restrained dog is at fault when an unrestrained dog attacks it. I suppose women who don't dress conservatively should expect to be assaulted as well, eh?

Sure I am an asshole and not an especially nice person, but I don't do anything like what this guy does. And unlike this punk, I don't pick on people who clearly can't defend themselves or bully women.

Granted, this sounds extremely douchey and childish, especially when isolated out of context. No doubt about it. However, there is a good reason I was putting those things on. If I'm going to go talk to a guy who has a vicious pitbull, I want to be wearing some kind of protection. Combat boots and thick pants is about the best thing you can wear if you expect you might be attacked by a dog.

A defense dog that tried to bark at the potential threat first, was provoked by your dog, on his property... I imagine your dog probably sounded a little more agressive then you'd have us to believe. I really dont think the dog was doing anything more than protecting his property.... and the age of your mother is totally irrelevant. I dont think the dog asked for her drivers license.

Having a dog that defends his property makes him a coward? And why'd you pick a doberman instead of a beagle? Perhaps because of his ability to be somewhat intimidating? Are you dense? Where I'm from, you can't have an attack dog, unleashed in the front yard, attacking every dog that walks by and barks at it. That isn't defending your property. That is terrorizing the neighborhood. You know how many people walk their dogs around here?

Sure my dog sounds aggressive, she is a 75lb black lab, she has a deep bark, but she doesn't run around off her leash attacking dogs. My next door neighbors on one side have a huge boxer, on the other side two yellow labs. They bark at each other all the fucking time. What kind of fucked up place do you live in that you can sic your dog on any dog that barks at him?



A dog unleashed in your front yard is not a defense dog. Defense means they are in the house and attack someone that comes into the house, or within a fence.

My dog was from a shelter. I picked a doberman because I needed a short hair breed that can keep up with me on my runs. And even so, she is not trained to attack and has never been in a fight with another dog. But yeah, it is nice having an intimidating looking dog inside your house, for when you aren't home. I have no problem admitting that.

The guy was a bully. Telling someone "walk on the street or you are going to get attacked by my pitbull" is not just a snide comment. Your dog attacks another (elderly) dog and you don't even apologize?

No shit, it's a good thing the guy came out in time and stopped his dog. I told my mom is the pitbull had bitten her it could have shattered her arm. Anyway that is why the police didn't respond, just animal control.

Yeah I'm with bhead too. I have a dog that is part beagle part lab and therefor barks like a motherfucker at anything that walks by the house. But If I had him out in the yard and the gate was open and another dog walked down the street and he ran after it, it would totes be my fault. Luckily for me though my dog has never bitten anything or anyone in its 8 years on this planet.
