As much as I don't like fighting in practice, the self policing really cuts back on the cheap shots.

Fighting in the NHL is classic, and it's not what people think it is. It's not a boxing match/MMA match within a hockey game. It's protecting a teams star players, changing of momentum in a game, etc.

I don't go into watching a hockey game to see a fight but I think fights are a necessary aspect of the game.

You know, I went to a fight once and a hockey game broke out.

fair enough. not that i'm against it at all, just kind of indifferent. a good fight is kind of fun to watch though i'm not sure it adds a whole lot to the game in the end.

To me, a lot of fighting is like a staged boxing match or something, and that's the stuff they need to somehow eliminate. When Georges Laraque leans over to Raitis Ivanans and says "Hey man, wanna go? Ok, good luck," that's just stupid and completely inconsequential to the result of the game. When Jarome Iginla and Vinny Lecavalier go at it in a huge playoff game, or when Darcy Tucker goes after someone for hitting one of the stars on his team, that is a direct result of the intensity of the game and the policing aspect coming into play. I have no problem when fights like that happen, but fighting purely for the "entertainment value" should be done away with.

Yes these ones can go, they REALLY don't have any real need

Fighting adds a lot when it is done in the heat of a game. If you win a fight, you can swing momentum in your team's favor and I've seen it lift teams to win before.

Nothing beats a goalie fight.

I don't like it when the officials try to break it up before anyone can swing. Let the players get it out of their system. I also don't like it when the two players circle around eachother for a while. Somebody take a shot already. lol

I think I agree with this. An easy concept holistically but a little harder to write down in a rule

Yeah and there for they shouldnt say that it's bad for the sport. :-\

And they should try and put a "rule" to it.

man I watch more hockey than most you guys and would be fine if it was limited. No offense to dudes like Hordichuk, but I could give a shit about the enforcer stereotype in hockey. It would be cool to see what would become of it if it went away

yeah that's the thing. I can't come up with that. It'd be nice to just see a culture shift instead of a rule change.

Yeah a DEFINITELY RULE CHANGE would just suck.

BUt I could see a Culture Shift, I mean it just needs to start young and kids just need to not be taught to be an enforcer, and then the enforcer role would change into a player that knows how to GAMECHANGE. (a Game Changer).
