Conan O'Brien and the White Stripes go back a long way. Like that time the tri-colored duo played "Late Night" for a whole week back in 2003. Or when the tall-haired host made a cameo in the trippy, Michel Gondry-directed "Denial Twist" video. Or when Jack and Meg played two songs in one show in 2007 to promote Icky Thump.
So with Conan leaving "Late Night" to replace comedy super-villain Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show", it makes perfect sense for the White Stripes to blitz the show's farewell episode. It will be the White Stripes' first live performance since summer 2007. As if you needed another reason to tune in February 20-- it's Conan's last episode, people! Conan is a genius.
Looking back at some of the old WS/Conan performances, a few things are clear: this band was on some seriously stratospheric level of cool back in 2003, this version of "Let's Build a Home" will blow your britches off, and they really need to put another record out soon. The world needs them.
No word yet on which song they'll play on the show-- I'm lobbying for "Ball and Biscuit" because it is amazing and will allow for maximum Jack spazz-age.
In other Stripes news, Meg auctioned one of her "Button to Button" drum sets to help ailing Detroit music scene mainstay Jim Shaw last week.

In other Conan news, fellow genius Norm Macdonald showed up on "Late Night" yesterday and killed.

Meg White didn't need to be a part of that at all. She took away from the performance as a whole, I thinkg.
I completely agree. Her presence was a gimmicky distraction at best. "See everybody?! I'm not afraid anymore! Oops, the rose fell out of my hair! THAT'S why I'm late on my vocal cues and I can barely find the chords!"

I forgot about it and turned to NBC just after 1:30 when Conan was signing off. "They say Conan has to grow up for the Tonight Show. Well, I can tell you that just ain't gonna happen."

How awful were The White Stripes? This performance seriously made me cringe.
They were pretty awful. The rest of the night was good, the clips were very funny. I just thought there'd be more guests. It was good to see Andy, but Will Farrel was pretty lame. I promised my girlfriend I wouldn't cry, so I didn't.
