For some reason I decided to try and track down some of the books I read in and out of school from middle school on. Stuff like The Pigman, My Side of the Mountain, A Separate Peace, etc. A lot of it really holds up well. Some of it does not.

Remind me of some other books of this type that may be worth going back over.

OK fine, I'm not gonna lie. The only reason I started this thread is for an excuse to go loiter in the young adult section of the library.

Calling children young adults doesn't make it legal.

Have you ever read Dragonwings by Lawrence Yep?

A young chinese immigrant moves to San Francisco and searches for his kite-making father, if I remember correctly. I had to read it in 8th grade and I still vaguely remember some of the passages that described the immigrant experience in America.

Actually, I couldn't remember the title for the life of me until recently. For some reason I remembered it to be some Pearl Buck novel but some clever googling proved me wrong.

Also Hatchet and The Giver are most certainly young adult classics.

Funny thing, I'm willing to bet every American on RM in their 20's remembers reading that book. When I peruse the books that the junior high kids at my school are reading, a Gary Paulsen novel shows up...but none of them have ever heard of Hatchet. It's strange. They read The River, which I think has something to do with Hatchet...but they have never heard of Hatchet.

the river is supposed to be a sequel. he goes back to the area he crashed at to recreate the experience for research or something. it wasn't nearly as good

Didn't the guy from Into the Wild get his idea from My Side of the Mountain?

No, I think it was Deliverance.

Haha, Redwall. I read all of those books.

One of my favorites was this book called Death Walk (or Death Watch, something like that) about this dude who witnesses a hunting trip gone wrong and then tries to survive as the hunter tracks him down. Great story.

Ha ha, yeah I read a few. They seemed geared more towards female readers, though....
