wow, what an awful division and an impossible division to predict. I think Cleveland will be up there but they don't scare me, Minnesota will regress (they can't continue to hit that high with RISP, Detroit has done nothing but get older, KC may suprise some people, but people have been saying that for the last 5 years. Who knows with the White Sox, they got rid of 2 guys that were awful last year yet people seem to thing they got a lot worse, i guess it really depends on what they're young guys do this year, but i don't see them in last place.

I could envision all five teams finishing in last place, that's how close these teams are. All five have a ton of question marks.
For Cleveland, it's the back of their rotation. What will they get out of guys like Pavano and Reyes and Laffey? You'll know they've given up on the season when Jeremy Sowers gets called up from Columbus. At least they appear to have fixed the bullpen. I don't see a lot of holes in the lineup, however.
If you think the AL Central looks bad, check out what BP thinks of the West.

How much confidence do you have in Wood?

Plenty. His arm troubles seem behind him now that he's not throwing as many innings as he used to.

joesanity, thanks for starting this thread. i think this division will be a lot of fun this year. i'm looking forward to the banter here. i think chicago should be the favorite. as far as i can tell, all they've done is cut away dead weight. kenny williams knows what he's doing. plus, i'm afraid of carlos quentin. any team with cliff lee pitching and grady sizemore roaming in center has a chance to be good. if hafner starts earning his paycheck and the gamble on wood pays off, cleveland should be in it come september. detroit . . . i guess i haven't seen what they've done this offseason to improve. their pitching has been on the decline. did they take lamb or everett from the twins? when you start grabbing that kind of shit, there's trouble. i think they'll finish last in the division. the royals are getting better. i also think the moves they made this offseason, though modest, will be helpful. crisp will be a good lead off guy in this division. i also think greinke is going to be competing for a cy young soon. this brings us to my twins. they've taken the same approach as the sox. they've added nothing. it's all going to come down to our pitching staff. i love 4 of 5 (not sold on perkins yet). they will continue to hit with risp. it's the last season in the dome. they'll play small ball. the fan in me says they'll win the division, but many young guys (gomez, span, casilla, buscher, kubel) are going to have to be consistent.

Detroit is the biggest question mark for me. At times I think they could actually compete for the division and at others I think they'll finish at the bottom. I think it all depends on what their bullpen does and how their starters rebound. Will Bonderman be healthy? Will Verlander return to the guy he was two years ago? Will Galarraga repeat what he did last year? Will they find someone better than Nate Robertson?

It will be real intersting to see how the twins adjust to being in a new ballpark next year. They basically built that team specifically for the dome which most teams now do.

well, you might want to pack a lunch, because outside of the contingent that bitches about everything around here, i don't see it happening. i can't wait to drive 15 minutes to watch a game with my son in a real ballpark.

I thought it was going to have a retractable roof?

nope. it will make for some cold ass april, september, and hopefully october games. still, i'll happily deal with that. retractable roof places still seem so confined. besides, don't i recall houston closing the roof because it somehow provided a hitting advantage? i'd hate for that to happen here.

Once again, every division that isn't the AL East is fucking bullshit. The Rays play the Yankees and Boston 18 times each every year and are still predicted for 92 wins, and yet in this model wouldn't even make the playoffs, even though no one outside their division has 90 wins.

I'm not whining about my team; my team is awesome. I'm bitching and whining about how your teams suck but still make the playoffs.
