i got a free year of aol when i bought my laptop. i used it for a while, but wound up calling to cancel it. when i called to cancel, the lady informed me that i still had service until the middle of october. i told her that i didn't care and that i didn't want it and to please just close the account, which she told me she'd done.
i got my bank statement in the mail today and, as per my usual behaviour, carefully reviewed it, only to find a $23.90 charge from aol!
i called them to ask what the hell was going on. they informed me that though i called them in june to cancel "an agreement was reached that the account would stay open." and that i'd been billed for TWO month's service, not one like i'd thought. after arguing with them, they agreed to refund my money and close my account.
the moral of the story is if you're using a free trial of aol and plan on cancelling before you have to start paying, watch your credit card/bank statments carefully. they'll still try to charge you, and if you don't watch out, you'll keep paying for something you're not using.
