We already have a thread about this. Probably because it happened almost four years ago. Why don't you kids run back to over to General Discussion now?

So people need to choose between posting for fun and posting for informational discourse?

I think most of us would rather see the GD shitfest (aka "posting for fun") stay in GD.

I agree with that, but all Jammer did was make a duplicate thread. I'm sure it wasn't done on purpose or was trying to be a "fun post". So why don't you get off your high horse. Just because someone like Jammer smokes a lot of weed and does stupid hit and is in high school doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed in the debate forum.

you don't have a problem with citizens taking this into their own hands in general, or just this particular case?

as a disclaimer, i didn't read the article, i just read jammer's headline philosphically, if one is absolutely sure of the guilt of the criminal involved, i have no problem with the law being taken into individual hands, especially when the crime involved is at this level.
however, practically, there are too many potential issues that could come up.

Society must win, no matter how much it sucks.
i like these remarks. they raise at least two further questions:
1. i do not know what has happened to the mother, but if she was sentenced to jail for any significant amount of time, perhaps it was not right for the family, yes?
2. in a truly just society, would not what is right for society also be right for the person? that is, in a "right" society, would there be a difference between personal and social justice? would this guy have been locked up longer? or did it not matter -- should this woman have turned her cheek?

As to #2, I would say this. In a truly just society, he would have been locked up forever. In what I would call a perfect society, however, I think the man would be fully rehabiliated and turned into a different, good person, and the family would forgive him completely.
I think justice is best served by punishment, but in a perfect society justice isn't enough.
