Anyone have this album? It's really good. I heard a song + an interview on Guy Garvey's Finest Hour. Had to check her out and am not disappointed.

I got this CD for free from a special deal on a website. Haven't got it in the mail yet but I've heard a few songs before and I liked them.

Yeah, I did a search, and I think I saw that you mentioned a song. I'm sure you'll like the album if you enjoyed a few songs. And totally jealous that you are getting it for free. :P

I fucking love that album.

I first heard a song of hers (Pieces of String, which is beautiful song) on a compilation CD given out at some show I went to a couple years back. It prompted me to download some stuff, then I bought the album from her site.

Definitely one of my favorite recent discoveries.

I've listened to the album twice now. Just really folky, good, and some fun songs. Pieces of String may be my favorite. Not sure yet.

New album, To Be Still, out February 09.

http://www.beggarsgroupusa.com/releases/to-be-still/

Quote:
To Be Still is the follow-up to Alela Diane's critically-acclaimed 2006 debut The Pirate's Gospel. That record brought the Nevada city, CA-reared musician a dedicated following across the globe (especially in Europe, where she recently finished a tour of mid-sized concert halls). Considering that early copies of The Pirate's Gospel were given away to friends in hand-sewn covers just a few years ago, this is not only quite a leap, but a well-deserved one.

To Be Still was created throughout 2007 & 2008. "It began in Portland, OR and was finished in scatters between tours at my dad's home studio in Nevada City, CA," Alela says. "I wanted to record this collection of songs using arrangements which would represent them in their finest form. These songs requested more instrumental filigree than those on The Pirate's Gospel. It was challenging to delicately yet purposefully incorporate instrumentation into songs that I was so used to singing by myself. I was determined to make it work, because I wanted percussion! I wanted to hear the lonesome bow of the violin! I heard many harmonies in my head, and so I set out to capture them."

Whoa- I didn't know about this:

http://www.last.fm/music/Headless+Heroes

Quote:
“Alela Diane actually lent her vocal talents to a studio project under the name of Headless Heroes which consists of several musicians (Josh Klinghoffer, Joey Waronker, Woodrow Jackson III, Gus Seyffert, and Leo Abrahams) that recorded an album of covers together. The album was produced by Hugo Nicolson. The Album titled ‘The Silence of Love’ will be released in November ‘08 on Names Records (UK) and Fargo Records (for the rest of Europe). In the states the album will be released in May ‘09 via the Headless Heroes record label.”

There's a cover of 'True Love Will Find You In The End'. I'm sold on that alone.

edit: http://www.myspace.com/denofheroes

1. True Love Will Find You In The End (Daniel Johnston)
2. Just One Time (Juicy Lucy)
3. Here Before (Vashti Bunyan)
4. Just like Honey (The Jesus and Mary Chain)
5. To You (I Am Kloot)
6. Blues Run The Game (Jackson C. Frank)
7. Hey, Who Really Cares? (Linda Perhacs)
8. Nobody’s Baby Now (Nick Cave)
9. The North Wind Blew South (Philamore Lincoln)
10. See My Love (The Gentle Soul)

awesome

I heard her talk about that on Guy Garvey's radio show a few months back.. He's the lead singer of Elbow, and he does the backing vocals on To You by I Am Kloot. He talked to her about doing the same vocals he did.

Saw her open for Blitzen Trapper last night in Boston. Really beautiful music.

She does a cover a Fleetwood Mac's "Gold Dust Woman" that rivals Stevie Nicks' vocals.

Fun fact: her father plays guitar in her band (can you imagine being in a band with your dad?)

Yeah, she's great. I downloaded her a few weeks ago when I was on a weird freak folk kick and I'm still listening to her. One of my favorite discoveries of 2009 early on.
