So here's my problem(s). The other day I had a pc cillin scan running and I cancelled it...I wanted to restart because I had just installed 2 windows updates. It took forever to cancel and restart. Once it restarted, I tried to play a video that I had recently downloaded and the sound/picture was dragging and skipping. Then I tried to play a song and itunes took forever to open...the song was skipping and popping once i got it to play and that has never happened with my laptop. The songs seem to drag and skip more when i'm running multiple programs/scanning, etc, which leads me to believe that I have a memory issue. I have also been receiving memory parity errors/ and the blue screen of death explaining physical memory dump, memory parity error, etc. Now when I restart, it takes forever to get to my windows password screen and takes forever to start up...once I finally get my browser open it seems to navigate the web just fine, but when i try to do anything else, it drags the speed down. Suggestions?
I would defrag. And if needed uninstall and reinstall PC cillin, because you may have be having trouble because of the interruption to the scan. It's hard to say though.
And if that doesn't help, maybe something is off-kilter in Windows Registry. Do a google search for a decent (and possibly free) Registry scan utility software. or http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/ There's a limited trial version of Registry Mechanic that is available. But its not a complete scan unless you buy the software.
If the registry scan doesn't fix the problem and all else fails, it sounds like you should start backing up any data you want to save, because you may need to reinstall the OS.

I have 2 gig of ram. When it started to bog down the other day I ran disk cleanup and there was quite a bit of junk hanging around, which was odd, because I clean up quite often. Then when I ran defrag, it took a very long time to get rolling...mainly past the 1% point. I'd rather not un and reinstall pccillin...i'm just not comfortable with the process, but I guess I should try it. A free reg scan found a shitload of errors, but i'm not sure about "fixing" them all because of some sketchy reviews i've found online. The library lookup tool said that sqlserver had something todo with allowing trojans and other information access to my pc, I was never sure what the icon was for in my tray . i'm thinking of reformatting, i have almost all of what i need backed up on external hd's...this sucks, this laptop has been nothing but perfect since the day I got it.

Unfortunately Trend Micro uses quite a lot of memory. In saying that too, I bought it with my computer new, and never had a problem with a virus, no alerts, nothing. It was great! But once it expired I went to Symantec Antivirus and it found me 196 viruses. I've never gone back to Trend Micro since. I stuck with Symantec for a while and still use it today with Vista, but I'm just experimenting trying to find the best one, so far this is it.

I'm wondering if I should "end process" on the pcctrl.exe or whatever it was, that is taking up so much memory...it's related to pc cillin, but i don't want it to fuck things up. i'd rather not reformat, i mean, i'm willing to, but most/all of my software is at home...far away. also, i've never reformatted before. the icon i was talking about with the sqlservr.exe was a small computer tower looking type icon in my tray and when i hover the mouse it says, "not connected"...i guess i always assumed that it had something todo with running my laptop on a server based network. i hope that doesn't sound stupid...hey lenny, thanks a lot for your help...jerk.

Not to sound like a weenie, but I'm not holding out much hope for you ridding your system of this menace outside of a reinstall of Windows. If you have your disks, this should be really simple. But I can understand you wanting to save from having to do this because of your software installs.
Once you go messing around in the registry, if you don't have a clue what you're doing, you could probably do more damage than good. And you'll end up needing to reinstall your OS anyways. I would just cut to the chase and save a lot of time and headache for yourself. Unless this sort of cat and mouse game is something that is interesting for you. Then I would suggest becoming active in a forum where the "registry" guys tend to hang out.

I'm going to start looking around for my disks, which ones do I NEED? I don't mind reinstalling Windows, it's just that i've never done it. I will just go through my program lists, record what I want back and start from scratch.

You should need which ever discs you got with your computer. Generally, once you put the disc in your disc drive it will start for you and lead you through the process.
I almost forgot! If you have set a restore point, you can also try System Restore before trying the reinstall. Not sure if that will work or not. But it's worth a try. *shrugs*
