Hey All

I started a similar thread in N+D. I'm writing a paper for a conference on political socialization and the internet and in particular I'm focusing on internet communities. RM has been my primary personal experience with this and I'll be writing about that, but I'm also very curious about others. Why do you spend time here? What do you get out of RM? How (if at all) has it changed you or helped you develop as a person?

I come here for lack of anything better to do at times during my day. I either read about music/movies to see if there is anything out there I should check out. 50% of my online movie rentals have come from suggestions on here whether it be the Movie of the Month list or whatever.
As far as coming here and posting a lot, I guess the personalities of some people here have become familiar to me and its almost like shooting the shit with friends. Though many of my posts can be made in a joking/sarcastic manner most of the time or the times they can be serious, I don't see it as much different as my interactions outside the internet except that I'm much closer to my real life friends. One benefit to the internet is that you can come into a conversation at any point because the words are right there for you to read.

People accept me for being gay here.

I honestly DON'T KNOW why I keep logging on. It's not like I have 'friends' here. I don't write anything worth while. I don't read News and debate. I'll just pick up a paper or read from the internet if I want something a bit more challenging. There's nothing going on with Pearl Jam at the moment... and the reason why I come to this particular PJ board is because the other one has ran it's course for me.

I come here out of pure addiction. Internet addiction, Pearl jam addiction. The need to log in and check to see if anyone has read/responded to what I have said.

Way back when in the early 90's I was on #pearl jam on mIRC chat. I ran into a couple of the old people in 2003 at the MSG New York City shows. They told me about this place, and here I am.

the actual PJ chat has become stale over the past few years, but the other parts of the board have kept me interested.

I agree with most of what mecca said. There are some great personalities on this board, and I'd love to meet some of these people in real life. There are plenty of places I could go out of boredom, but it's the community that keeps me coming back.

Obviously the main reason I started coming here was for teh Pearl Jams.

Once I started dicking around on the other parts of the board, I got to know several people and they've become part of my "online family". I log on to check up on them and see what's new & exciting in their lives.

What do I get out of RM? Endless lulz.
