Seriously, though, I guess I'm better prepared than 90% of Americans, despite only having been working full time for under two years. Go America!

Is not having kids not part of being prepared? ...

but it still changes things... unexpected costs come up with kids.

i'm not defending people who overextend themselves any more than by saying it's tougher to be completely financially secure with kids to support.

Yeah, I understand, that sentence is hard to read... I was trying to think of the right word to use and couldn't do it, that sentence was the best I could come up with. It will be easier if I elaborate, so here was my point:

The decision to have kids is easily as important of a financial decision as buying a house. I don't subscribe to the notion that people can have kids first and ask questions later, as if having kids is ok when you can't support them. Too often in this country we look at young people who have kids and we don't even give it a second thought, as if responsibility does not apply to that situation. Well, we criticize someone for buying a house or a car they can't afford, why is the decision to have children above reproach?

If you make a decision to wait to have children, that is part of being financially responsible. The way you asked SD that question implied, to me at least, that when people have children it is not their fault if they are unprepared financially. Like, SD has no kids, so there is a good reason for him to be prepared, but if he had kids, he would somehow have more of an excuse to not be prepared?

I just have a real problem with the way this country deals with having kids. I'm not convinced reproduction is a human right. I prefer to treat it more as a privilege, just like owning a house or a fancy car is a privilege. If you can't take care of yourself, you shouldn't have the right to have children.

i agree with the responsibility part, i disagree with the last paragraph as it screams of totalitarianism. i'll elaborate on what i meant tomorrow, but i was in no way giving people a free pass to have kids and be irresponsible with their money or downplaying the significance of the issue on every level.

not everyone plans to have kids. this entire spiel is based on the assumption that only people who plan for kids have kids or they are just teens having kids.

With what frequency do Americans get paychecks? Weekly? Monthly?

I think the article assumes that most people get paid every 2 weeks. There is no standard though, it's up to the employer.
