I just heard this by way of my Google Alert setup, I took a look around and didn't see it posted already, if it is I apologize.

Quote:
The CBS drama "Cold Case" will use 16 Pearl Jam songs in the show's two-part May season finale. A number of the songs will be from the group's 1991 debut album, "Ten."

On May 3 and 10, the band's music will be used exclusively to tell the story of a female cadet who was murdered at a military academy in 2005. The case brings up difficult memories for Lilly Rush (Kathryn Morris), a detective with the Philadelphia Police Department.

"The breadth of the Pearl Jam catalog captures not only the spirit of alienated youth, but narrates that journey to adulthood and disillusionment and redemption," Jennifer Johnson, one of the show’s executive producer and the co-writer (with Greg Plageman) of the episodes, said in a statement. "It was the perfect accompaniment for Rush's origin story -- told in flashbacks -- of how and why she became the first female homicide detective in the PPD."

Which 16 Pearl Jam songs will be used has not yet been determined.

In the past, “Cold Case” has woven the music of a single artist through one episode, but this is the first time one band has been featured in two episodes. Other artists who have had their music spotlighted on the show include John Lennon, Frank Sinatra, Nirvana, Johnny Cash, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Tim McGraw, U2 and Bob Dylan.

that's a lot of songs.

I wonder if we'll start seeing more stuff like this in part because the people who grew up with the music are now in a position to make these kinds of decisions

Good god. That's a song every 2.45 minutes.

This is such overkill. They're ruining their reputation.

Yea I spoke earlier with a good PJ friend of mine about this when showing her the link privately, she's got VERY mixed feelings about it. I know there have been songs used here and there in some shows over the years, but an entire album?

The band didn't come up with the idea, and it's a very kind gesture to them. It will also probably just be snippets. And it could be pretty cool.

That show always features music. Its mostly just clips as scenes change or in the backgrond and such. Never close to the whole song. At the end of the show a song usually plays for like a verse or two and a chorus or so with no talking over it as it features the characters of that show and how they were effected by whatever happened in that episode. I haven't seen the show that much but I saw the Bob Dylan episode and I'd say there were at least 8 different songs and it wasn't overkill at all and was pretty cool actually.

Well I remember that short-lived ABC drama "October Road" used Come Back a couple years ago in one of their eps. And it was damn near the whole song, at least 75% of it, I would venture a guess that it was the most of any one PJ song that's ever been used in a TV show at that point (and probably still now).

Apparently enough do. I think it's in like its 5th or 6th season. Of course that doesn't automatically equate it with being good, but...

Isn't NCIS in the 85th season? Isn't it clearly documented that their ratings share is ZERO?

It's fun, the music has always played a big part in the show. I don't think it warrants a claim of ruining one's reputation or credibility. I see it more like an acknowledgement of PJ being part of the history of music, or something.

This was the band that always had that independent spirt, doing things their own way. Now they're re-releasing music and placing songs in bland TV shows like corporate whores. Seriously. I feel like a broken record because of my bitching and I'm sorry if it bothers anyone, but it feels like they're really trying to cash in these days. They're entitled to every penny they get, but I wish it was a little less obvious. Perhaps its just the effects from the current state of the music industry, but it bums me out. If the next record doesn't impress me I don't know if I'll renew my membership next year.

But they abandoned it when they saw what kind of monster they were dealing with. They tried to circumvent the system, albeit to no avail. That's what I'm talking about. I'm well aware that they're a major label band. Its no secret Jeff and Stone always wanted to be huge, but they chose to control things on their own. And now in recent years its like they've said "Fuck it, let's go for the vault."

16 songs in a TV show is just another step closer to them licensing their music for commercials. I'm not saying that will happen, but its almost the same thing. That's what upsets me so much.

Yeah, let's see it before we judge the whole thing.
