My mum's going to hong kong so she's going to see if she can get me an ipod fairly cheap. i was wondering what size ipods people have, i think the mini will be too small so i'm leaning towards the 20gb one, which i'm guessing should be fine provided i don't put bootlegs one there...

yeah, i would consider getting something that's not an ipod, but i'm having enough trouble as it is getting my mum to recognise what an ipod is, i can just see her getting swindled or getting some 128mb mp3 player because she doesn't really know what an mp3 player is.

I just got a 2nd gen Dell DJ 30 gig. It cost me 240 and came with a dock, USB cables, AC adapter, leather case, and earbuds. The 2nd gen is probably 2/3 the weight of the 1st gen and is now directly comparable to the size and weight of the iPod, and still has great battery life (12-15 hours).
So, uh, none of that is really relevant, but here's a point: I had the 1st gen 20 gig DJ for about a year and never used the full 20 gigs. I had the bulk of my mp3's and probably 15-20 PJ bootlegs (not always the same ones), so going with 20 GB should be fine for you.

Cool
I'm not even sure what I want on there exactly, I'm guessing just a large portion of my CD collection. Anyone know approximately how many cds would fit on a 20GB?

I currently have 2112 mp3 tracks (almost all of them at 192 kbps or better) and am taking up 13 gigs. So, depending on the size of your collection and what bitrate you rip at, you can probably fit all of your albums on a 20 gig.

*calculates*
yeah... that sounds about big enough. I doubt that would fit every single one, but there are plenty I don't need on there anyway. Excellent

On those new Dell DJ's can you organize your music? I've never owned an Ipod or DJ but am seriously considering it. I looked on the Dell website and you can download files and other things on the DJ also. Am I correct on that? That would be great for school instead of carrying around those small flash drives (that my wife has lost at least one of ) But the DJ could serve 2 functions. Carry work for school and listen to music. Let me know how you like it.

I have a Dell DJ 20gig and I love it. I have a total of 154 albums on there with about 10 gigs of free space left. I found that I there is no need to have all my cds on there because I probably won't listen to them all. That's something else to consider, whether you will end up putting everything you own on it or not.
I believe that the dell one can carry other files too, although I have not explored that aspect yet because there is no real need for me to do so.
My uncle has an ipod and i compared mine to his and liked mine a little better. My aunt actually made the comment that mine was easier to organize and was easier to manage.

Jeff, if I wanted to use my DJ to transfer different kinds of files between computers what would I need to do? I would obviously need the USB cord, but then what would I use to grab the files off the DJ? Do I need to install the DJ Explorer on the other computer?

I've got a 20 gig iRiver player with something like 3100 songs @ 192kbps or better on there. It's like my new best friend, even though I've had it for about a year now.

It should install automatically (if it's WinXP) once you connect it via USB and power on the DJ. You can then access it through My Computer/Windows Explorer, etc. and just drag and drop files.
