My mom, the queen of all church and puppy forwards, sent me this e-mail. It's not particularly offensive, but she has a habit of forwarding stuff with very consideration to whom she may be sending. Should I call her on the fact that this is just a bunch of jokes about racial/gender stereotypes?

Quote:
There are 3 good arguments that Jesus was Black:
1. He called everyone brother
2. He liked Gospel
3. He didn't get a fair trial

But then there are 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish:
1. He went into His Father's business
2. He lived at home until he was 33
3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin and his Mother was sure He was God

But then there are 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Italian:
1. He talked with His hands
2. He had wine with His meals
3. He used olive oil

But then there are 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was a Californian:
1. He never cut His hair
2. He walked around barefoot all the time
3. He started a new religion

But then there are 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was an American Indian:
1. He was at peace with nature
2. He ate a lot of fish
3. He talked about the Great Spirit

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Irish:
1. He never got married.
2. He was always telling stories.
3. He loved green pastures.

But the most compelling evidence of all - 3 proofs that Jesus was a woman:
1. He fed a crowd at a moment's notice when there was virtually no food
2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it
3. And even when He was dead, He had to get up because there was still work to do

Can I get an
AMEN!!

I wouldn't expect a Kansas hayseed to be sophisticated enough to understand.

Because you're making light on unflattering prejudices. In the list above there is Jews don't move out of their parents' home, Italians drink a lot, Irish are lying bachelors.

These jokes are mild, but they aren't drastically different than

What do you get if you cross a negro with a pakistani ?
A car thief that can't drive.

I agree. But I will go one step further...

Jokes would be no problem if everyone in society was intelligent, decent, and above all, fair.

However - many are not. So just because you or I think it's funny, doesn't mean it can't cause long term harm to a society (perpetuating stereotypes, that is).

There are many people who really think all Jews are greedy, money hungry, people - simply because that's what some jokes have told them.

so is it okay if i say something like, "asians are good at math" because it isn't unflattering? is the prejudice the problem, or is the fact that i'm making light of something the problem?

so is the standard that if stupid people don't understand something, we should do away with it altogether?

Positive reinforcing stereotypes are not as harmful as negative ones, Mr. Thodoks. Though they can still be harmful.

Well, if stupid people (who make up most of the world) have the ability to elect leaders who kill minority groups based on stereotypes, then yes.

how about we bar them from voting instead of barring them from telling stupid jokes?

That's fine. How do I bar them from committing hate crimes against me?
