Well, I think sun devil and thodoks answered this rather nicely on the first page and perhaps people feel that it was summed up there rather tidily.
An alternate explanation of why people may not have directly answered that question, is perhaps they find it rather silly. It implies that if something is not a necessity it should be done away with. Should we ban everything that is not absolutely necessary?

i don't think banning guns is the answer at all but the cult of the gun is really odd to me. what is the root of the problem? paranoia? institutionalized mistrust? a huge ratio of people with severe mental problems who have access to said guns? the downfall of the "american dream"?

I think if we could push a magic button and there be no more guns on earth most people would say to push the button. But that's not the case. The practicality of outlawing guns is simply not there. And enforcement...well short of stripping people of all their basic civil liberties, enforcement would be impossible. And that's among law-abiding citizens. I'm thinking it would be even more unlikely to get criminals to part with their weapons, thus leaving the law-abiding citizen more unsafe than at the beginning of the process. I understand the emotions behind wanting guns outlawed, but the real world application is simply not there.
This, right here.

can't agree there. i'm for anything civil rightsswise. drugs, gay marriage, whatever else go ahead. guns are just something i see no point in and are actually harmful to other people. you can make any arguments you want about protection and whatnot but i can't help but see those arguments as ridiculous.

Why do you see those arguments as ridiculous?

What ridiculous about wanting to be able to protect yourself? Surely you can argue that maybe firearms aren't the best way to do that as far as the risk involved, but whats improper about wanting to enjoy the most basic right?

that's the thing i'm questionning: "the most basic right" to possess a firearm. isn't it a bit silly? what ridiculous about writing in the constitution that everyone has the fundamental right to possess a Kenny G cd for relaxation?

The most basic right I'm refering to here is self defense.

I don't think you read that right. The infringement of civil rights would be when the government came to COLLECT the guns that are already out there. The same way that the fourth amendment has been eviscerated over the past 40 years by the "war on drugs". It's not about the right to own guns. It's about the right to be free from unreasonable searches.
Read it again.

so if you hate handguns so much, would you be willing to put a huge sign in your yard that said, "I HATE HANDGUNS. THIS HOME IS GUN-FREE!!"?
do you think this would make you more or less likely to be victimized by a violent criminal?

Ban handguns. Oh, that's a brilliant idea. So you can still own rifles and submachine guns, just not handguns. With such great ideas I don't see why you guys aren't in charge of our country.

this.
as it is, i find this whole "i hate that, and don't understand why, people want guns...so let's ban them" line of reasoning to be incredibly juvenile. don't misunderstand; i enjoy debating an issue with someone who disagrees with my position. but employing such deficient reasoning makes me suspect that reasoned and informed debate will NEVER convince some of the posters in this thread who have so far appeared neither interested nor able to debate on such a level.
