what about smoking around children?
putting myself at risk of injury is different than putting children (or any other person/s) at risk of injury.

I support repealing mandatory seatbelts as long as we can shoot people who are injured and not killed. I'm not willing for my insurance rates to increase because a vegetable was too stupid to put on a seatbelt.

yes. the government has no right to control what i do in my own car.
I can agree with this sentiment in relation to wearing a seatbelt. My wearing a seatbelt or not doesn't affect anyone else. It doesn't make me a better driver.
But to say the government has no control of what I do in my car, certainly if I'm driving I'm not blowing Buff, nor am I high as a kite, or drunk. Things that I would do in the car that bring harm to others is totally fair game.
Unfortunately, I don't see seat belts as one of those things. Although kind of silly to protest, imo. It's a horrible time to be closing a business, bad economic move, even if it's just a few days.

i'm not saying it's impossible; i'm asking whether it's really something we should consider. if it's never happened, it's not very likely to happen in the future. it'd be a terrible reason in which to base a law.

If you repeal the law, eventually a bunch of "the gov't doesn't have the right to tell me what to do" types will kill themselves off. Eventually, enough of them will die that the mandate will pass again. Those guys will increase their numbers again and start bitching until the law gets repealled again. Then they'll all die off again ...

Humans in a crash can also cause serious injuries to other humans when they collide with each other. People in the front seat of a car are often hit by rear-seat passengers as they fly forward with incredible force. Loose objects inside the car are thrown forward at the speed the car was travelling at. A book, brief case or even a pen can cause serious injury.

Aha, this brings up a good point.
That point is that the laws regarding how a person must drive necessarily encompass one's conduct within a car. That is to say that if you are doing something in your car that causes you to violate traffic laws, you are necessarily violating traffic laws. For the most part, it doesn't matter what causes you to violate them, it only matters that you did violate them.
Obviously, the government should be allowed to make additional laws to regulate statistically significant causes of dangerous traffic violations. If talking on a cell phone is statistically linked to dangerous violations, the government has the right to regulate talking on cell phones while driving.
I think this is an example of why it's usually better to regulate the "effect" rather than the "cause". It's why you ban shooting people, not guns. It's why you ban drinking beer while driving, not drinking beer.
